What the *&$#@# Happened to My 911 While in Winter Storage?
#16
Ugh. I am getting orders to Japan for three years and the gov't is storing my 997 in LA. I am told it's indoor storage, and they start the car, move it around the garage, and cycle the AC and heat. I'm most concerned about the lack of action the PDK will see. Hopefully no Ferris Bueller road trips...

Wow. Sorry you went through that ordeal, but it's amazing a car could revive like that.
I'd have someone measure it with a paint thickness gauge now. It'd be a good ideal how much clear you have to play with for polishing in the future.

Sorry to see what happened to the car but your detailer does fantastic top notch work.

Good to see they were able to restore the paint condition for you. If that's your regular parking spot I'd be concerned as your probably getting salt and calcium through the overhead concrete slab cracks usually from the car parked right above you. Your car doors look like they've been dripped on pretty good so this will continue to happen every Winter when vehicles bring in snow and salt then it melts goes through the slab cracks and drips on the car below.

I remember when Ivan measured my paint, back in 2014 on my new 911. I was having paint correction done prior to OptiCoat Pro. IIRC, he said my car could easily be done 24-26 times. I do it every other year. So I'm good for about 48-52 years worth of detailing.

Three Wheelin'
Probably would have incurred the same exposure to salt/grime driving the car on the road without the storage fees, ha.....sorry man. The detail looks good though.

What car cover would deflect this type of damage? I know there are several levels and makers of covers.

OK. I am from deep South Texas and we run summer tires here year-around. So the idea of winter storage is kinda like the idea of clam chowder down here. But have you checked the odo? That looks like someone stole it, drove it like a Pcar is suppose to be driven, then put it up wet! That detail pro - Ivan - does indeed do great work.

Wow what a mess.
You found the right guy to clean it up. It looks great.
O/P - how long was it stored? And how long between inspections? did you ever check on it?
If unattended, should you have had the building supervisor or security be checking in on your storage space?
Should you be building that clause into next year storage contract?
I have all my boats in the boathouse, on an island in the middle of a frozen lake.
I trust all the red squires, mice and raccoons are asleep and hibernating in their dens, and not my boat.

Now I’m just waiting to recoup my $2,000 from the cleanup ..... Wish me luck, and I’ll keep you all posted

I keep my Gulfstream in a hangar when its not in the air but even then, after a good wind storm the top of the wings and fuselage get a good coating of dust requiring a $1K wash.. Point being I recommend a pure cotton cover and then the silver Porsche car cover while in a covered garage. It will protect from leaking pipes, birds pooping etc while the cheepo all cotton cover will protect the paint.
PS. the all cotton cover can be a Cal King top sheet bought on the cheap.

Well, I received the good news that I was hoping for: The facilities management company agreed to cover my full out-of-pocket cost for the paint correction and film clean up on my 4S
We agreed that their reimbursement will cover everything predicated on the following 3 conditions:
1) I agreed to use a car cover (on both the 4S and the ‘68 911L which was thankfully not damaged) to avoid any future seepage problems
2) They agreed to credit my storage account for the amount of the work done
3) They agreed to move my 2 parking spots to the TOP floor of the 3 levels of parking (to avoid the kind of seepage problems that Mumbles referred to)
All in, I’m happy with the result. While I certainly didn’t need the horror and frustration of seeing my (newly painted and filmed) car look like it had been at the foot of the Mt. St. Helen’s covered in crusty crud, at least I got both my cars moved up to the top level of the underground garage where they will be safe! And I’d like to think that this whole ordeal has taught me a relatively cheap lesson in how to store your car: COVERED (with the right kind of cover), and regularly checked! Thanks to everyone for your help on this, and I’m glad to report a good outcome here
PS - If anyone is looking for the contact details for Ivan Rajic at LUSTR detail who did this amazing paint correction in the Chicagoland area, here’s his website because he is the REAL DEAL! http://lustrdetail.com/

The 12’ jonboat, however, spends the winter stored upside down on our beach with the 9.9hp Merc outboard wintering in our boathouse...The only problem right now is that there is still 20” of ice on our lake that needs to melt, which the weather this week hasn’t helped. Ice out this year still seems a LONG ways away

I have a very nice outdoor cover for my 928 Spyder that cane from Auto Anything. I think its called a Guardsman or Guardian or something like that and I believe is made by Covercraft. It's a soft material on the inside but a silvery tougher material on the outside. They're custom made for each car type and the one fur my 928, because its a convertible is actually for a corvette since it has almost the exact same proportions. I can look up the details if interested.
Honestly if I was parking in your situations for months at a time, rather than a normal cover, I would spend the extra money for the outdoor version of the car capsule brand storage pod and maybe use an indoor cover onside of it to prevent prying eyes.
