Hi all,

Here is another victim of engine failure. (Might be IMS or D-chunk. Investigating now)
My car is 2006 997.1 C2S with 69k miles.

Fortunately, I did have an extended warranty that can cover up to $15k to fix it. That was an original contract.
But shop estimated with new parts to submit to warranty company which is way over than $15k. So now my next task is how to fit the cost to $15k.

So, I am shopping used or rebuilt engine now. Could you help me find one?
These are what I could find so far.

And just out of curiosity, is it possible to fit 997.2 engine to 997.1?
997.2 definitely has less risk of catastrophic failure that I am dealing with.

Do your homework. You get what you pay for. A proper rebuild won't happen for less than $15k if you have a competent shop do the work.

Do you know which IMS bearing revision your car has?

Gilbert, can you provide more details about your car and the IMS failure; mileage, how much driving do you do, oil type, oil analysis, how the IMS finally went out etc?

I just heard it could be a different issue, not IMS bearing problem. More will be confirmed. Will keep updating this post. And still look for used/ rebuilt engine.

Have you tried LA Dismantler...they usually have some low mileage engines in stock?

Get an rnd engine - has the important upgrades to last forever. And just pay the difference.

Though there is a large discussion about short blocks that are feasible from Porsche in the 996 forum. Look through that thread.

If you're looking to stay within a budget and not trying g yo do performance upgrades with the rebuild (note I said upgrades, not improvements) then RND Engines is the way yo go. Fastest turnaround time and includes the important improvements for a better go the 2nd time around, like Nickies, reworked heads, IMS Solution, etc

Arent the rnd engines 24 grand minium assuming you have the best case core for them?

If that's the case I can see them being in great option for those with a very expansive budget.


As an FYI there is a 2008 3.8 l engine on car-part right now for 17500 that has 26000 miles on it. You could then sell your core for I'm guessing 5 grand or so? That puts you at 12.5 which gives you plenty left over for install and any upgrades to it.

Another option is an mb rebuild at 15 grand but you have to give up your core.

A basic rebuild with Nickies and not really doing much else starts at $15k, and that doesn't include all the things that bolt onto the engine that are always needed. The problem is the lead time. The block with plating turnaround is at about 6-8 weeks, plus time to build the engine and everything else, so you are looking at a 3-4 month downtime easy.

The RND program give an option for those wanting instant gratification with the requisite Nickies and dual row IMS Retrofit, among other items, at a similar cost as the above rebuild option.
