Default Advice needed, getting back in after 10 year wait

Having owned a 2000 cab (manual) and a 2003 turbo X-50 (tip) previously, I am anxious to jump back in to owning my dream car. I sold the 03 in 2008 when my kids were little so it’s been a 10 year wait to jump back in. With a budget in the 40-45k range for a weekend driver, been looking at several options. I like the interior upgrade of the 997 and want something different than my previous cars so any 996 is out. Cab is a must but I’m neutral on the 2s or 4s. Looks like I can get a highly optioned 2007 or 2008 s, is that the best option for my budget and needs? Manual trans is also a must given it’s only a weekend car. Would prefer an S model and mileage under 40k but realize something has to give when you’re trying to stay within a budget. I’ve read enough to stay away from early 2005 and 2006 models given the engine issues so looking al all 2007-2009 cabs.

Appreciate any advice, feels good to at least be back on this forum!

What's your driving style for the weekends?
Track? Canyons? Cruising?

If you're casually cruising the car, I'd get a 997.2 C2, less headaches and probably in better condition. Facelift and taillights cooler. No bore scoring.
If you're pushing it, 997.1 2S. Little more age wear and old technology in the car, but you gain performance.

not a popular choice, but the base 2009-10 car with PDK is pretty great driving, much improved over the tiptronic, and the 997.2 is overall upgraded for around your price range.

Welcome back! I did same thing with hiatus and just got back in to a 997.1. I paid about 40 for 06s with 18k miles (90k msrp). Your budget is about right depending on where you live.

Bore scoring seems to be the new IMS...haha! Always sumthin...so I didn't pay much attention to the noise.

Good luck with search and remember, the hunt is half the fun!

I won’t take it to the track but do like to drive aggressively when I can find roads that will allow it! I’m looking at a 2008 s model cab with 55k miles this afternoon that seems to be in great condition for a 10 year old car. Trying not to jump on the first nice one I find but it does have several options I like. Can probably get it for around 43k - seem reasonable or is that a little high for the mileage? I’m being told that manual trans bring a premium so it’s higher than some of the similar equipped tiptronics. Here are some pics from the listing, would appreciate any feedback. Mileage is my concern but I know these cars can go well over 150k if cared for properly.

Price seems high...looks like you're in Texas? I live Dfw.

Love this value here....you have to love brown though which I do. You could add sport chrono to it either after market market or via dealer.

I’m in DFW but looking in Austin and Houston as well. A little more concerned about Houston given the recent flooding but assume that would be discovered during a third party inspection. Hard to sit on the sidelines, I’m ready to find the right car and get back into Porsche ownership! Appreciate the link to this one in Houston, that seems on the low side given what I’ve seen low mileage 08’s going for. Does that color hurt resale value? It looks nice in the pics

That Macadamian is a really cool color in person. Someone I know has that color but has a darker interior like cocoa or something. Looks good with the tan as well. Add some classic Cocomats! Was there an issue with the tan interior and glare ? Like a class action suit? Have fun searching!

That price is totally fair for a .1 6speed cab and that one has some good options like Sport Chrono, the solid red taillights, etc. The late 05 and 06 cars are no different than the 07s and 08s as that's when the went to the larger IMS bearing. The only change from 05 to 06 was the addition of Tire Pressure Monitoring and weight based passenger seat airbag deactivation - everything else is the same.

I know it's hard to act quickly when you just start looking, but you need to be ready to do just that - had I not, I wouldn't have my silver RUF 997, which would make me sad. In Dallas a good place for a PPI is RAC performance. Good luck.

I was pretty impulsive buying my car last November, but I'm not sorry. Since I've bought it I found out that 997.2 manual trans cars are hard to find and my color is unique, so I feel lucky.

If you are looking in Houston, check the used inventory at Porsche of North Houston. While they usually advertise the 918s or Carrera GTs they sell here on RL, they have a lot of "everyday" Pcars too. (No affiliation, happy client.)

my advice is, coming from the old days of an old engine and a tip, get a 09-up 3.8 DFI and PDK. Otherwise you may as well stay where you are.

You are in the lower end of the 997.2 range although real low mileage maybe an issue in that price range. Be prepared to travel to find your car. I live half way between Houston and Dallas and picked my 997.2 up in California. Love it though. Updated electronics compared to the 997.1 in my opinion. Welcome back I took a 25 year hiatus from my last p car.

Thanks again for all the advice, I’m going to raise my budget to 50k and look for an 09 cab s with a manual transmission. May be tough to find but I know it will be worth it to get the car I want. Let me know if you come across one, appreciate the help!

OP you can spend that $50k on a Porsche.... tractor

or increase your budget to $150k and buy the VW microbus that Porsche North Houston has for sale.
