WD40 is a good all around product. In the beginning of time I did the car wash on engine thing. That ended as the price of the subject grew. I like a orange smelling spray on product that you can hose off. Gunk? On my 911....whatever I can reach with my hand and a cloth loaded with some sort of mild cleaner is good for me. Im mean were are talking about 3 square feet.
