Default Driving 2009 911 questions

https://www.landroverstlouis.com/use...db8c111718.htm

I drove this car Saturday having never driven one of these I wasn't sure what to expect. It was very unimpressive performance wise considering it has 300+ horsepower. I own a 1993 968 and I don't think its much if any quicker than my 968. Does this seem right?

Thanks
Jeff
PS had to be towed back to dealership do to a loose hose. They supposedly replaced all hoses & belts but left a hose loose.

It is much much quicker. But in order to get there you can't go below 4000rpm.

exactly. When I describe 911 drive experience to someone who has never driven, I say it's quick, not fast. Throttle response is unmatched, but you need to live above 4K. Oh...and 3rd gear...the sweeeeeet spot!

It will either speak to you immediately...or it won't. I have lots of car friends who don't prefer my car, but they respect it.

I'd be concerned about the loose hose. Mine are all still new looking and you don't need to touch the hoses to replace a belt. So why did they mess with the hoses?

It’s not a V8. It’s makes power and torque using revs. So yes the engine needs and wants to be reved. If you did not exceed 4K rpm you were not even hitting the power band. The variable cam timing does not even kick in till it’s above 5k or so.

Unless there was something actually wrong with that 997.2 Carrera, it should be significantly quicker than your 968.

Here's a list of independent 968 performance measurements. As you can see, it make to the 60-100 mph sprint in the mid-9 second range - http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_....html#968Coupe

There's actually very few independent measurements of base 997.2 Carreras. But C&D tested a base 997.2 Carrera w/PDK (just like that car) and recorded a 60-100 sprint in 5.8 seconds. That's on a different planet compared to the 968. Here's a list of 997 reviews (which includes independent measurements): https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...l-reviews.html. It'd take an uber rare 968 Turbo S to match a base 997.2 Carrera w/PDK in a straight line. 15+ years of progress...

Karl.

PS: I'm a huge 968 fan, best shifting transmission ever...

No one asked me, but I will chime in anyway. The first time I drove a 997 911, I wasn't impressed. I drove a few more (and a few 996's) and if I'm honest, I never got the impression of speed from driving one and found my '07 335i is faster. But speed is only part of the equation. There is something about the whole experience that makes me giddy and keep driving. In the end, I bought a 2005 911 - no not the fastest in a straight line, but if that's what you're looking for, there are better choices.

Maybe you haven't found the right one.

I don't think I'll ever need much more power than 385hp and 3,200lbs. How much can you actually have fun with on public roads?

Me, about 475.

OP, it's more than just the speed. It's the front end feel, the corner carving, the sounds, the smells, the 911 experience. Every drive is an event no matter how long or short, but it has to speak to you. I'd drive another one as well to make sure the one you drove was working properly before as it might have been in limp mode and why it didn't feel fast.

I wouldn't have been impressed by a base Carrera without sports chrono or sports suspension either (at least not on city streets). Particularly if you just shift the car to "D" and don't shift the gears yourself at all.

Unfortunately or fortunately, whatever the case.. Porsche has made the base model cars fairly muted if they don't have any performance options. I was about bored to death in a base model 991.1 Carrera. Driving my GTS is night and day different in comparison. For 997 the options and how you set up the car to drive make a huge difference. If you leave it in "D" (you aren't actively changing gears at all) and no sports mode (because the car doesnt have any) and the suspension is soft.. well yeah it's not exciting.

I ended up needing to get into a 911 with some performance options in order to be impressed (on the street.).. sports chrono, sports suspension, sports steering wheel.. that stuff transforms how the car drives when you turn it on. I drive my car in sports+ nearly all the time, shift myself, set the suspension to its firmest setting.. and its almost like a real sports car. On track.. I'm sure even a base Carrera is a lot of fun.

The first Porsche I sat in and drove was a manual 997.2 C4S. Liked it so much I bought it

OP - Fined's response above hit on the key point.

Performance of the 997.2 PDK car without sports chrono is completely emasculated by the very poor transmission shift logic... it keeps the car in too high a gear for fuel economy and is very slow to downshift even when on throttle... you need to almost floor it to make it downshift

As others have said all 9A1 motors make their power high in the rev range (whereas, ironically, the 968 3 liter 4 pot has quite good midrange torque), so if the PDK shifts are not revving the engine above 4 or 5k, the car feels very sluggish and unresponsive.

That is what you felt.
