997.2 Water Pump - Failure Symptoms?
2009 C2S 123K miles
OK, just thinkin........ what does a failing 997.2 water pump sound like?
I never really had a Porsche pump fail, although changing my springs (one snapped) on my 2000 Boxster circa 175K miles, my indy saw dry weepage on my water pump so he said to change it... I did.
My water pumps in past, like my wife's Lexus, would start to squeal/screech..... once you hear one fail like when I was a teenager in the '70s, you pretty much know it is a water pump for the rest of your life as they are all the same.... or are they?
Peace

From what I've seen, we 9A1 owners are in the dark as far as pre-emptive maintenance goes. There doesn't seem to be data on when things on the 997.2 are supposed to wear out, or break.

Yeah. I'm used to having a bunch of stuff to worry about. My mechanic might have to sell his boat.

They changed the design of water pump on the 997.2 engine - i don't think it has those propellers that can shrapnel into the cooling channels anymore - one less thing to worry about......
Usually you can look at the pump wheel / serpentine belt and see if the bearing is noisy or has movement when spinning....they still have bearings and i would think they can squeal like a piggy

I'm not exactly a water pump expert but unless one of the following events occur, I don't see there being any action required:
1) loss of coolant / visible signs of coolant leaks
2) unusual noise
3) dashboard indication of coolant temperature issue

If they still have a weep hole near the bottom, like the .1 pumps, you'll usually see evidence of seepage at that hole shortly before the pump is going to fail. What causes seepage there is the bearing wearing to a point where the tension of the serpentine belt creates enough angle where coolant can start getting past the seal, and that's when it starts coming out the hole. If the .2s don't have a weep hole, I guess you run it until it fails, or maybe change it preemptively at 100k or 125k miles or so since I believe both Wayne and Bruce are up over that mark now.

What about doing a coolant flush? Surely we don't want to have the same coolant sitting in the system for 10 years. I would hate to open the system to do a coolant flush, then a year later have to do it all over again to change a failed pump.

Out of curiosity, I sent the following inquiry. The response follows. It looks to be a straight-forward process but I have about 20 months to go on my CPO. I may just wait and see if anything develops during the warranty.
I recently purchased a low-temp thermostat for my 2011 Carrera GTS from your website. I have Porsche coolant and a genuine Porsche water pump. My GTS has 39,800 miles. Should I replace all three? What do you recommend?
Ticket 1147 has been replied to.

We have not seen as many problems with the .2 water pumps as we had experienced with the earlier M96/M97 water pumps, so we do not have a recommended interval for these. The M96/M97 we recommend a 4 yr/ 50k interval, so you are approaching twice that (time based), so it certainly cannot hurt to change the water pump out at the same time that you are doing everything else.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to let us know.

I have 124K miles on my '09 water pump and have no plans on swapping it out. (I do hear voices in my head telling me to do it, but I doubt I will.) YMMV.
