Why are there so many (ex-)BMW owners driving Porsche?
I noticed that many of the 997 drivers have had a BMW on their curriculum (often in an M(otorsport) version) and I wondered what explains this affinity with the cars from Bayern?
Is it because both are typically RWD, German, high(er)-performance cars?
Because they have a sporty image?
Because of the heritage (but then Mercedes Benz would need to be right up there)?
Feel free to enlighten me
(ps. I have never been very loyal to a specific car brand, but the last one before the Porsche happened to be a BMW as well... a 6-series E63. Thought it was pure coincidence... until now )

I’ve had an E36 ///M3, two E46 ///M3’s, E28 ///M5 and currently a wicked fast E82 135i. I truly believe in BMW. Me owning a 911 is a dream. We all grew up with 911’s hanging on our walls. Every time I get in my 911 I can’t understand why I ever want to drive my one series.

Because BMWs are the girls you date and Porsche’s are the girls you marry. Or maybe because BMW is still reeling from selling its soul to Bangle in exchange for mass sales (with the exception of a couple M variants) while PAG/VWAG, also caving to sales pressures, doesn’t seem to be as “blandified” and still recognizes heritage/performance/image also sells cars. Or maybe it is something else.

^ Agree with the posts above. Go on the BMW forums, almost everyone driving a BMW sporty car aspires to a 911 of some sort, Base, S, Turbo, or GT3.
As you stated, they are similar as they are both German Sports cars, Porsche is just better and in my opinion more reliable. If you can afford a Porsche, get the Porsche, almost everyone on the BMW forums would agree.

My second car is a 2013 128i M Sport.
I do not care even a tiny bit that it is a BMW. What I care about this particular car is as follows;
50:50 weight distribution
RWD
smooth 6 speed manual gearbox
3,100lbs weight (its about 200lbs lighter than my 911)
reliable N52 engine
small size but large enough back seat for someone to sit back there comfortably

I wanted a 911 long before I wanted a BMW, and I wanted a wagon rather than wanting a BMW. BMW is one of the few manufacturers that still sells wagons in the US, and during my search, the E91 was most driver focused out of the available choices.

Exactly this. I am on my fifth BMW (an X5 that is my daily). My 911 was my dream car and I am lucky to have it. I will likely always have a BMW in the stable. That said, in a couple years when I get rid of my wife's Audi Q5 I may get her into an X5 and then it will be Panamera time for me as a daily.

My d/d is an E84 X1 and doubles as the doggy mobile. Good car, quick, handles well, etc.
The 911 replaced an AMG (SLK55 AMG Black Series) that I spent a good amount of $$ to perform at the track.....and I got tired of the car driving me instead of the other way around. The nanny intrusions from the stability control finally got the best of me. Bottom line, I’m quicker now around the track with 200hp / 175 tq less vehicle than the AMG.
Case closed.

Been Porsche driver and raced them since high school in the 80s. Bought my first Bimmer, 2017 M3 CompetitionPackage, in December 2016. Cannot stand it and have been trying to sell in for a couple of months.
