Default PPI List and light history car

I called my local Porsche dealer for PPI info. They quoted me $400 cdn plus $15 for provincial (state) safety. I am considering a car with 70000 miles 2006 base C2. Good service history for about 35000 miles. then light service history. Here's the thread:

Local Porsche dealer sent me what they do on the PPI. What are your comments on considering a car with light service history with the following PPI (PPI does not include bore scope which I would likely pay separately if this is successful):

Not sure if you have driven this yet. I believe you had weather issues impeding the ability to test drive. I would drive and then if it felt good, consider the investment in the PPI. You should be able to assess the clutch condition to a certain degree by driving. The pictures of the car look very good. It does look like it is cared for. 2006 is a good year, you don't have to worry about IMS.

That PPI list is pretty extensive. If it passes all of that, it will decrease risk. Oil change history would be important to me if you could get it for recent owner...

Even if it is super clean and pampered, with no major engine or mechanical defects, 39,900 is way high. For a base 06 Carrera with 70k miles, I would consider 32-34,000 to be more realistic. If your budget is around 40 grand, look for similar or newer S models.

I am no trying to rationalize the price, but $39900 is about $32k US dollars. Cars in Canada new cost about 10% to 15% more after currency conversion.

Were you meaning US greenbacks or Canuck bucks?

I didn't pay attention, my bad! I meant US $, so the suggested CDN price would seem about right. I also think the total mileage is not a bad thing. I purchased mine with 62,000 miles.

Or, maybe hold off, save a little more, then go for an S. Faster, more desirable and better resale eventually.

I see some discrepancy on the details of the car. On the right it said automatic but clearly it's a 6sp manual. On the bottom is says fully loaded but this car has absolutely no options, not even power seats. Also states it has sport chrono but doesn't. Either the guy who created the ad knows nothing about Porsche or he's just being a salesman. If it all checks out, I think $32k USD is the right price to start but I would definitely negotiate down a little. I have a feeling the salesman will only go down a few hundreds and not in the thousand.

Very limited inventory in Canada. I have no interest in an S or a 4. Mainly because I prefer the smaller seats ala air cooled. Car is a base with BOSE, litronics. Option wise, I am good with it. I am only concerned with it non having PASM but easily remedied with Eibach has which I can do myself.

My real concerns are if the the ppi is sufficient for a car on light recent maintenance.

is this car worth considering with a clean ppi. Besides borescope, any othe checks you can suggest?

other 997’s that I have seen have not been this clean.

my other option is a 2009 or 2010 997.2 for $60k. $20k premium plus 13% tax.I am trying to justify a $22600 premium for a car that Imwill likely keep forever and drive at most 3000 miles per year.

I'm also in the market for a 997 and base on my extensive research on this particular model, the 2009 997.2 performance is only marginal compare to the 997.1. Yes the DFI engine deleted the IMS bearing but this is really no longer an issue with the 06' - 08'. So is the $22,600 premium worth the upgrade? Not in my opinion. If you like the car and everything checks out, go for it.

Hi Steam_mill,
I remember seeing that car on Auto trader when I was looking to buy one this summer. I never ended up visiting the dealer but it's been listed since end of August (maybe??). I ended up picking one up privately in the GTA in September. Price seems good, but with the amount of time the dealer has been sitting on it i'm sure you can get a few grand off. it's worth a try..

Any reasons why you decided to go with the 997.2 over the 997.1? I've driven both and the 997.2 performance isn't really worth the premium $15k+ IMO.

997.2 Pcmis better and has Bluetooth. I am not too fussy on the 997.1 interior pcm silver surround.

997.2 has no ims. If I purchase a 2005 997.1, LN solution is $7000 Canadian. That gets the price halfway to 997.2 territory. For whatever reason, more 2005’s come up for sale than any other 997 year.

As with most hobbies in Canada, inventory availability and maintenance support seems to often be an issue. I could tell you stories about buying and getting stuff in Canada that is quite perplexing. Often you can’t find people to even give money too lol. I used to work in the U.S. The availability of products and services is quite different. I live in Toronto proper. Not the suburbs. Toronto is the 3rd largest city in U.S./Canada. 10 million people in the greater Toronto area.

Wanna go to the barber? Better be there before 6pm. Want to get your Saeco espresso machine serviced? 1 guy. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm. Need valves adjusted on your Honda atv? 2 weeks. Need your carb rebuilt on your John Deere lawn tractor? 3 weeks. I take my boats in for servicing in March. I get them back in a week. Why March? If I wait until April, it is a month long backlog.

Porsche independent garages, actually almost any higher end independent garages are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. So, better find a way to get the car dropped off. For example, the one certified LN solution installer is 25 miles away. At 10 pm, that’s a 35 minute drive. Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm it turns into an almost 2 hour drive one way. North America’s busiest highway runs through Toronto. I used to work in L.A. Traffic is easy there!

For my ATV servicing example, my neighbour owned the dealership for 40 years. Actually one of the largest Honda dealerships in the province. For 40 years, he would open Thursday nights To 8pm. Great to drop machine or pick it up before weekend. New owner stopppedmdoing this.

Steam_mill - if Toronto is such a large city, I wonder why there are lack of services there. You guys must have a serious issue if the traffic is worst than LA. I've been watching the market for a 997.1 and I'm also finding a lot of the 2005 models for sale. I guess owners know of the IMSB issues and don't want to deal with it. Fortunately I do have an IMSB certified installer about 25 minutes away but like most places here they are also open from Mon-Fri between 9-6pm.
I was looking at a beautiful 2005 C2S with low mileage, from the engine serial # I was able to find it has the smaller IMSB. So ideally it's 06'-08' models for me, Now I'm running into choices where some are S model some not and some have better options than other. Or great car all around but high mileage. Yeah it's not easy finding just the right Porsche at the right price but keep the faith and keep on searching.

16 lanes and is congested 6a to 10pm.

Canadians are cheap hence the lack of businesses catering to hobbies. When in the states, at Home Depot, and you ask for an item, staff will walk you to the item. In Canada, you get “oh, check aisle 22”.....

But we have healthcare!

then there is real estate. I live in an 1200 square foot bungalow. Arguably one of the best neighbourhoods in the city. Wort $1.6M. That’s still $1.25 US.

A couple thoughts:

If your mechanic claims he can predict which bearing you have from the M96 s/n... you might want to check with Charles N. or Jake R. to confirm the mechanic is LNE certified before letting them work on your car's IMSB.

I assume that the $400 includes an oil and filter change. I see some unnecessary or low added value checks on your PPI list--no harm but it makes me wonder if the mechanic is P-car "guy". The list is generic (glow plugs, hybrid system, etc.) and I would think an ace P-car mechanic would have a P-car list, maybe even a 997-specific list. My PPI provider did.

A couple things I would want checked that I may have missed on your list:
  • Comprehensive paint thickness check
  • Valve cover leaks $$$
  • Ferrous particle check in oil filter media
  • Interior and "frunk" check for odors, dampness, mold, mildew (especially on a cab)
  • Accessory check against the Porsche build sheet and sticker. After getting my 997 I went to load up the CD changer listed on my build sheet. I couldn't find it because it was missing.
My personal favorites on the list were setting accurate time and checking the operation of the rear view mirror. Good luck!
