Default Pinewood Derby 997

My son is in cub scouts, and its pinewood derby season. Last year, we made a 308GT4 pinewood derby car, and actually took first place. This year, we decided to go with my 997 Targa. Everything was done with hand tools. It was actually much tougher than I thought it would be, and we had to do tons of sanding. If I had to do it again, I think I would have done it a little differently, cutting the front out first before adding the side wheel wells, etc.. The lines aren't perfect. The front still isn't perfectly smooth, but it looks pretty good in person.

Here's some pics from the build:

For paint, I happened to have a spray can of touch up paint in Porsche Racing Green (22G).

After the paint was done, we hand painted some windows in silver paint, the fender protectors in black, and got some Porsche 1:18 decals from ebay. Put them on the car, and painted with Clear coat over them. The finished product came out pretty well, IMHO.

The actual race isn't until a couple weeks, will update on how it goes. I'm not sure its as fast as the 308 we made last year, but we still have time to do some tweaks before the race.

Finally, here's a pic of the 1st place 308 GT4 from last year (The red and black one):

Wish us luck!

Nice! Good luck at the race!

I remember building these with my dad when I was also in cubs. Our first car was a black 930 turbo cabriolet and we won some regional awards for the design.

Funny, they're still around at my parents house. I'll have to find some photos of it!

Polish the axles to a mirror finish, be sure the weight is to the max, bring a couple dimes and super glue to the race.......and only 3 wheels touching the track. Just saying......

Yep, axles polished, comes in at just under 5oz. Still need to adjust axles.

I hope he doesn't have any IMS issues during the big race. Best of luck!

Thanks! It's a 997.2, so shouldn't be any issues, but I had my son replace the IMS bearing just in case

Tonight I plan to have him check for bore scoring.

Race was today. Got 3rd place!

We did bring the 308 from last year, and aftwards raced the two against each other. The 308 beat the 997. I wonder how much aerodynamics came into play for the pinewood derby, as the 997 is taller than most of the other cars.

I won mine years ago (okay, decades ago) and the secret was the polished axles! Good luck!
