08 c2s with blown motor

Any thoughts on the value of a c2s 6 speed with a blown (but rebuild-able) motor? 35,000 miles. GT Silver coupe with sport chrono, Bose system, and heated seats. I've added LED lights and H&R lowering springs!

It drove to the garage where it is parked but makes a terrible noise. We have a few things to check out but we are not feeling good about the situation.

Asking for a friend!!

For me the value would be the value of the car with a working engine, minus $25K for a high quality, upgraded rebuild.

... that would pur you in the $12-15k range. If you aren't going to rebuild the motor yourself, depending on equipment (wheels, seats, interior trim, etc), time, space, and capability you have, you might come out ahead parting it yourself.

Sorry to hear about this though. Let us know the diagnosis once its looked at, as well as other details. How many total miles, how many since you've owned it? Northern climate car at any time during its life, service history, etc.

it has about 35,000 mikes (17,500 when I bought it December 2012). I did drive it in the cold a little when the roads were dry and did a couple DE's this year. I've been talking to an engine re-builder, I just want to have all the info I can before pulling the trigger. If I could get enough out of it to put towards a gt3 or turbo I would definitely consider it. 12-15 k pushes me toward a rebuild. Any thoughts on the value of a car with a flat 6 rebuild (4.0 stage II) vs a nice stock car with an IMS upgrade? I'm looking for rationalization data!!

BTW, Porsche locator has prices from $39,000 to $58,000 for 997.1 coupes. Since I have not looked for a car in years I really have no idea what they are going for. Anyone have a recent purchase?

I would think less about the resale value and more about what you really want to drive.
If you are interested in doing track events, then the GT3 is appropriately on your wish list. A GT3 is not something I would buy to use on the streets and infrequent mountain road drive. Stiff suspension, and a harshness that works on the track but not on the streets. In a non track environment, the Turbo is lots of power and big fun factor. It is a different feel and you need to drive one to understand.

Flat 6 rebuilds, particularly with the 4.0 stage II, would give you the car you enjoy driving with lots of power. Not sure if you will recoup all of the cost of the engine rebuild but as I said in the beginning, your decision should not be based on resale value.

MJSporsche, your points are well taken (especially on the street-ability of the GT3). I was cosidering gt3's and turbos before my situation. I do believe there is some upside to those models as far as future value but that clearly is not my sole purpose of looking at them. I really enjoyed the track days and plan to do a few a year in the future but most of my time will be on the street. Keep in mind at my current 3,000 miles a year pace an less comfortable car is not the worse thing in the world. Whatever I do the car will always be a hobby vehicle, not my primary vehicle. I am leaning heavy toward a rebuild and my decision won't be based solely on money but if I found out a car with the stage II kit was worth an additional $10,000 to $15,000 that would be a factor to consider in my decision.

If my car in the current state is worth $25,000 and a rebuild is $25,000 am I better off to put that $50,000 toward a turbo or gt3. That is what i'm wrestling with. Please understand I am not basing my decision only on costs, just trying to understand my options.

I think based on what you've said, even if you rebuild you'll still be thinking about a GT3 or Turbo...

kisik 02-10-2018 12:06 PM

I would just rebuild. No need to go to all in for $25k but modestly for $16-$20. Open up and assess the damage. Used 3.8L are from $12-$16. Any 997 turbos and 996 GT3 are from $65 and up. Totally different animals.

Petza914 02-10-2018 12:53 PM

A good turbo is $75k minimum. A good GT3 $85k or higher.

997.1 c2 base cars are around $35-$40, less with a Tip. C2S cars are in the $35-$42 range based on mileage and equipment. C4S cars with MT are the ones selling at closer to your top end scale

Vincent713 02-10-2018 02:33 PM

I'm currently in the market and shopping for a 997.1. So far I've seen them range from $31k - 35k for base model and C2S from $35-40k. Just recently I looked and test drove a 2008 C4, the car has 50k miles and runs really smooth. I'm curious as to what had happen to your car? Did you get an IMS failure?

Doug H 02-10-2018 03:03 PM

A car with a non-original motor will also take a heavy discount.

There was that 07 that had a new motor factory installed due to an IMS failure. That owner spent some serious $$$ on that engine including a highly desirable full F77 package, full Tubi headers and exhaust system. All work had been done by Champion Motorsports and was well documented, but that car still sat for months and he had dropped the price down to mid $30ks.

This car with a new factory installed motor without a power is a low $30k car and may be a tough sale at that unless factory aero, highly optioned and has a power kit.

Is that the car Doug M bought that he sold since?

No idea brother. I could only fund a link to the original ad. I tried to pick it up for $28k and was going to put an aero kit on it and buckets and a roll cage in it after it had sat for several months. The car was on consignment for this listing. I don't know owner's name.

A later listing in the $30s had the receipts for the engine and F77 package.

When did you see this car prices in the mid-30s? Every listing I’ve seen has been 42k+.
