So I have put a 997.1S 3.8L in my 996 and had Dundon Motorsports build a custom exhaust. The first thing we learned is that most coldair intakes just help with sound but we lost 20HP because the cold air intake does not do an adequate job in isolating engine heat... We decided to stay with stock 997.1 intake as a result....I will be selling my cold air intake as a result. The exhaust that was built gained substantial torque and about 40HP if I recall....when we are done with the build I will provide all of the curves. THe exhaust looks as follows on my 996 (keep in mind its a 997 engine).

Cool looking exhaust and a well designed merged collector - similar to the Fabspeed where you have all 3 pipes from one side with a straight section just before coming together in the collector.

The problem with trying to test a CAI intake for power on a dyno is you can't reproduce the 60-100 mph air stream that's entering the engine compartment in real world use since the car is sitting stationary on a dyno, so of course you get heat sink and less dense air entering the motor. That's why the analysis method using MAF readings and fuel trims was genius as it gave real world use analysis using the cars own DME for the readings and comparison.

I've toured the Fabspeed assembly shop in Fort Washington, PA, while having installation work done there. I saw the giant multi-million dollar cad driven, cold steel fabrication presses that are used to bend SS pipe to precise configurations. They had stacks of exotic vehicle-specific headers and exhaust tubes lined up and piles of reject pipe (apparently pulled for not meeting tolerance criteria). I saw Lambos, Ferraris and LOTS of Porsches having work done throughout the facility.

Forum members can believe what they like and listen to rumors and hearsay as they will, but I know what I've seen and how impressive the Fabspeed shop is. BTW, I have no other connection or allegiance to this company other than as a satisfied customer.

Entrance to the Fabspeed shop...

A recent customer appreciation event in October.

Yup, me too. After installing my intake and exhaust system I was in the Philadelphia area, gave Alex a call when I had a couple hours before my flight home and he said absolutely stop on by. Gave me a tour of the whole place and there is plenty of fabrication and work going on there - they had a least 10 work stations with welders, mandrel benders, tuning bays, etc.

The stuff is well designed, well made, works, and fits - not sure what more you want from an intake and exhaust company, but I've been happy with all the 997 products I have from them *** well as my Cayenne Secondary Cat Bypass pipes.

No affiliation here either, other than being a satisfied customer.

Thanks for the kudos guys! Feel free to stop by or shoot me a message anytime!

OP - our 997 Carrera Performance Package is a fantastic way to free up additional power and add a more aggressive, traditional flat-6 note. Install is by way of direct bolt-on replacements with no cutting/welding required.

In my own experience, the seat-of-the-pants improvement is noticeable, not to mention the intoxicating exhaust tone! Reasonable yet still refined and not overbearing.

extremely interested in hearing a clip of this, and whether Dundon will be selling this exhaust to the general public once yours is finished.

I had a few people ask so here are 2 dyno plots from the last 2007 997 C2S that was in.

GREEN/BLUE dotted.....Bone stock
GRAY dashed. ....just headers and cated x pipe (stock mufflers
RED/GREEN solid.......after quick flash.

Stock air box. Stock new air filter. Every aftermarket airbox we test and see does not shroud it for cold air and it only draws hot engine bay air. Static on the dyno or even running at speed.

lowpue's yellow 996 does have a more custom exhaust and yes it is possible to build more of them however it does cost more than probably most or all exhausts available for these cars. That exhaust pictured there does make about 10lb ft and 10whp more than the exhaust setup that we build that is in the dynos pictured here.

For dynos on The yellow 996 you will have to keep posted and keep tabs on our Instagram page as well as his write up when fully completed.

Must be hundreds of threads here on the exact same topic. How to add more power. The consensus seems to be that Porsche has done all they can at the factory to squeeze what's available out of these cars at each model level. People have spent crazy money on intakes, exhaust modifications and I forget what else with the typical result being a 10-15 hp gain....if that. The fact that Porsche's own $14,000 X-51 kit only adds 20 hp tells the whole story. The only choices for meaningful HP gains on the non turbo cars seems to be some kind of forced induction system or sell your car and buy a turbo. RL member Petza914 has a RUF supercharger on his C2S that he's happy with. Don't recall hearing about any problems.

Ahem, that's 26 hp as claimed from the factory.
Though there is some data indicating that some X51 cars make more than that. Some owners reported dynos of close to 400hp at the crank.
X51 is such a comprehensive upgrade package that it wouldn't surprise me, though it's hard to say for sure what the exact gains are unless someone upgrading their 3.8 with the PowerKit records before and after dynos under the exact same conditions on the same dyno.

Either way, it was well worth it to me to find an X51 car for the sound alone. I love the deeper tone.

So let's split the difference at 23 hp. Everything I can find says a 2009 C2S comes with 385hp and an X51 GTS has 408hp. Agree 100% on the exhaust note of the X51 though. Not sure what makes it what it is but definitely more grunt. The PSE/Sharkwerks combo on my GTS seems hard to improve on, at least to my ears.

Where I was going with this was that I find it hard to believe that a plastic tube for just over $200 would yield 50% of the $14,000 X51 kit power gain and a more elaborate intake system for $760 would add 70% of the X51 gains. I would love to be wrong on this though since then I could add a $760 Fabspeed intake to my GTS and bring it close to 430hp.

and porsche is quoting the gains at the crank whereas the gains in this thread are based on whp numbers. 23chp is around 20whp.

997.1 X51 package claims a 26chp bump (355 => 381), which is what I thought was the subject of the previous discussion.

Right on. So we're talking about ~23whp from cyl heads/cams, int man, tb, headers, exh,

Keep in mind the aftermarket folk don't have to worry about emissions typically (aka for off-road use only), which is why you may see better gains than a factory package. Also, people just like to modify things and it's their money.

My car currently has the Fabspeed exhaust and x-pipes. Next I'll be adding an intake, GT3 TB and IPD plenum. I'll dyno after.

I was under the impression that we were discussion 997.1s as well. Nevertheless, Sandwedge's comments I think still ring true. Certainly the dollar per horsepower gain from the X51 isn't there, but the fact that it has the Porsche factory behind it is compelling.
