Overheat ?
 

Stuck in a huge traffic jam yesterday. Bumper to bumper. Move 10 feet, stop a minute. 45 min of this. 55 degrees. 2005 997.1

Noticed oil temp getting slightly warm maybe 225 on the gauge. OK.

Then I noticed the water temp had moved past the 175 deg mark. That's never happened before. Now I'm interested.

Then the oil temp goes over 225. Thats never happened before.
Then the water temp was past 200. Time to pull over.
Sat there for about 30min andit had cooled to normal. Drove home with no traffic and normal temps.

I'm going to let the car idle this evening when I get home and see if this happens again. What should I check?

Are your radiator fans working?

Definitely going to check that.
If they were not working at all, I think the temps would have risen sooner, like after 10 mins. Not after 45 mins.
I'm guessing there is an oil fan and a water fan?
Are they both one stage? On or off?

New water pump a few thousand miles ago.
Guess I'll check the coolant too.

If one fan is working then it's possible it was able to hold off the temps for awhile. What was the Ambient Temp?
I sit in traffic like that occasionally and while the oil temps will rise, the coolant is kept in check.
BTW, the coolant temp gauge isn't accurate. Get an app like Dash Commander and an OBD2 reader and you'll see that the temps hover
between 185 & 200 even on normal driving.

Kinda freaked me out when the water jumped off the factory 176 degree setting.

Yeah, that's an issue. The gauge doesn't move unless something is wrong. My OBD2 System will say 200 but the dash gauge never moves from 175.
If you think about it, the OE thermostat doesn't start to open until 185 so...

You said you just had the water pump replaced, have you checked the coolant level?
Did they replace the coolant or just burp and top it off? it's possible there's air in the system.

Sat at idle in the driveway for about 20 min after I got home. Eventually the oil temp began to slowly rise. Once it got just below 225 the water temp gauge began to rise as well. The rear engine fan was definitely on, The front (oil cooler?) fan was on but not as strong as the rear. If its a two speed fan it wasn't on high.

I'll check the coolant in the morning.

OK. Two radiators with their own fans. Drivers side might not be coming on. Half the fan cooling fits the symptoms. Will verify that.
Was thinking there might be oil cooler, but no - water cooled DOH. So used to air/oil cooled.

High/Low speed fans. PS-2 to operate/diagnose them, and the resistor packs . . .

Coolants full. Pretty shure its the drivers side fan.
I'm taking it in next week.

BTW Like the fact that there are two fans - if one fails you still have half capacity.

Thanks for sharing. I think you may be the first or one of the first to actually have the water temp gauge in MFD move past 175. For what it's worth, I've pulled my water temp data from the track runs via OBD ii and its usually 211-225 degF.

I also see around 225F in water watching OBDII during track sessions. Just wondering what was your oil temperature at the time? Perhaps I can learn something how to stay below 240F.

At idle the oil temp slowly climbed to just below 225 when the water temp started rising above 176.

Kind of makes me wonder how hot it is at different locations at idle with one fan out. Didn't want to operate it further once I was sure both were steadily heading north.

Wonder if Porsche was actually smart enough to allow the water gauge to show elevated temps (even though its not an accurate number) when need be?

Sometimes a pebble will get lodged in one of the front fans. By removing the fender liner on the driver's side, you may be able to see if the fan is stuck. Reaching in and turning it by hand might be a simple answer. Was the thermostat changed with the water pump? Another possibility. Goo
