Your 912 looks terrific and I really like the color. My 68 912 below at a PCA Timeline event a few years back.

911L....first I've heard of that version. I lived in Europe in the early 1970's which was the first time I could even dream of affording a 911. At that time the 911T was the entry level followed by the E and the S. Came close to buying an orange 911T with a rather rare 4 speed tranny but they gave me such a shameless trade in price for my near mint TR6 that I couldn't bring myself. Gotta google that 911L. Suspect it's an earlier variant with a low production number.

Yup, you’re spot on about the 911 L. In 1968, the 911 S didn’t meet the new US federal emission standards, so Porsche couldn’t sell any 911 S’s in the US that year. So instead, they created the 911 L as a one-year-only model for 1968 that was basically a 911 S with everything EXCEPT the additional 30hp of performance (it was the same 2.0 litre engine, just detuned from 160hp to 130hp). Other than the detuned engine, the 911 L had the full S spec, including dual-circuit, ventilated disc brakes, the exterior S trim, interior dash S trim, 5 speed tranny and (I think) the magnesium engine case. There were only 449 911L’s produced so they are indeed a rare breed. The 68’s were the last of the SWB’s, and in 1969, they replaced the 911 L with the E as the middle of their line up, with the T at the lower HP and the S with the higher HP.

These little SWB beasts are an absolute blast to drive and are a true “analogue” driving experience. Plus, with absolutely no driving aids or technology whatsoever, driving these things in the twisties at 45 mph feels like driving a 997 at 145mph . Here’s a shot of the rear with the L badging:

Loves me some arctic silver & black - gorgeous.

I always seem to end up with just black - never ending washing.

RJ - Been watching your posts since you picked up your 997 Cab. I'm in Chino and a Riverside PCA Member. I'm sure we will meetup eventually. I will most likely be volunteering at the Festival of Speed in April. Maybe see you there.

I almost purchased a Black 997S. I read another forum members quote that "Black is not a color but an occupation" and laughed outloud. I'm quite happy with Silver.

I had a TR-6 too....I thought the term tr-6 and mint were mutually exclusive. From my experience once you left the dealer there was nothing but trouble!

My 964 was begging for driver skills. Nothing like drifting a 964 C4 around a hairpin at Auto Club speedway or correcting a mistake heading into the corkscrew at Laguna Seca.

Thanks for clearing that up. That's one rare example in your garage that I'm guessing will stay there between drives no matter what it may be worth. The rear bumper looks a little more elaborate (more chrome?) than the European models as I recall them. As I also recall it, the 911T had carburetors and the E and the S had fuel injection, at least for the early -70 models. If that's the case then your car would have injection rather than carburetors since it's a tuned down S. And I agree about the driving experience of those cars. My brother in law had a yellow 1970 911S Targa that I drove a lot. Absolutely intoxicating which is why I almost made the idiotic move of giving my TR6 away for the 1970 911T.

I have a 997S as my daily driver, i also deal in Air cooled Porsches & just can't get enough of the 964, by far the best air cooled p car in my opinion! what are your thoughts on 964 compared to 997? have any pics of your 964? I just had a 92 964 Targa that i was almost ready to make as my DD & sell my 997S but ended up selling the Targa ..

I never thought I would sell my 964 but market conditions and desire to go with a newer 911 prevailed. The 964 was a blast to drive and always got attention as they are quite unusual to see on the road. The 964 requires more driver input and had more road feel. I would own one again but I fear the market will keep the prices high.
