Fabspeed dual-cone intake for a 997.1?
 

Hi All, I currently have a K&N "cold-air" intake installed and have been enjoying the pronounced intake noises it makes going beyond 4000 rpm.

I always loved the carbon fiber and dual cone design of the Fabspeed intake and it alone might be enough to buy & install...

...however if I can get a little bit more intake sound (over the K&N), I would be pretty thrilled. Can anyone confirm?

Looking at past threads there was a ton of debate about performance gains on aftermarket intakes...I'm reading those threads as we speak and I'll factor that into my purchase decision so no need to discuss here.

first of all, the intakes purpose is to make the engine run better. It is supposed to take in more air and maybe make more velocity and ram it in better. The purpose is not to make different sounds. If you have ever heard of a cold air intake, that is supposed to denote you are taking in cold air from the outside of the car, and the reason is because cold air makes it run better. Hot air is a killer of power, the hotter the air into the engine the less power it makes. The stock porsche air intakes are pretty good for cold air. Alot of the aftermkt air intakes are bad for letting excess hot air into their systems. They arent sealed away from the engine compartment and let alot of hot air in. I always liked the K&N because it seals off the hot compartment air and it has a good long velocity tube.And my car ran great with it. I never liked the fab because it lets in too much hot air and doesnt seal off the engine compartment enough.

you speak truth but most folks here buy after market intake/exhaust for the sound first .......which is ridiculous .....even when they lose low end torque.......

I had the Fabspeed carbon fiber dual air intake installed as my first engine performance mod. I noticed a very small change in the idle and low rpm sound level, being a bit bit deeper & only slightly louder. At WOT it was a different animal altogether (very loud). I can't offer a comparison, but I imagine the K&N offers a similar experience. I am admittedly a big fan of the Fabspeed product line and am totally enjoying the other add-ons I have purchased. Very fortunate to live about 15 minutes away from the Fabspeed corporate center/performance shop outside of Philly and have spent some time there while installations were being done. It's very impressive.

I have it on my car. I love the sound and looks. I get compliments every time. I love the sound and would have to believe that it sounds similar to your K&N. I had the intake & 200 cell X-Pipe from Cargraphic installed at the same time. I lost Hp but gained Tq on the Dyno. My vote is to go for it.

When sitting in traffic, the open intakes stuck in warmer engine air, but who cares about power in traffic. When underway, more than enough outside air enters through the engine lid where there is virtually no temperature difference of the intake air. Someone did a thorough head to head comparison of stock airbox vs CAI and proved trough lice Durametric values that the intake does in fact make more power at higher RPM due to the less restrictive intake taking in more air and mixing it with more fuel. The more exhaust mods you have, the greater the effect - headers, mufflers, cats.

I have a Fabspeed J-pipe intake on my RUF Supercharged 997.1 C2S and it runs the best with this one - better than the stock airbox, and better than the newer Fabspeed Y-pipe, which I also tried. I think most likely my issue with the Y-pipe, was that because of the spoiler hydraulics, I had to cut one side of the intake pipe so short that it clocked the filter and might have created turbulence in the intake tract, or with the supercharger forcing more in than normal, the fuel injection couldn't compensate for the extra air of the Y-pipe, but in either case, I'm back to the J-pipe and everything is great. A non-modded engine with the Y-pipe should be fine.

From personal experience, our 997 Competition Air Intake will most certainly gives you more induction sound over OEM (and I'd likely say the K&N also). We have received very positive feedback on them, in terms of power gains, appearance and "sound".

I have the Fabspeed CF dual intake in my Turbo. I run the Cobb AP to keep an eye on IAT (amongst other things) and have not seen any increase in IAT's. The car runs great at all temps and while sitting in traffic your fan should be pushing cooler air from outside into the engine anyway.

correct, these are not oiled filters. I clean with some simply green once a year.

If this really doesn't have any HP power gains, why do anyone want to do it?

Dyno testing without the benefits of a ram-air affect (higher intake pressures) are not accurate to what occurs on the street/track.

I am not saying there will be a large power difference but there will be a difference.
