Default Odyssey Battery? Anyone Use One?

2009 C2S 121K miles

Using the Odyssey website model finder, they say the model 48-720 is the one for our cars. They note this battery is $268 and " please note; battery is shorter in length than original battery ". Hmmmmm After some googling, I get a bunch of varying information.... most good......10 year service life is sort of expected with many getting less..... I don't know. I have a CTEK MUS 4.3 charger... this is NOT listed on their supported charger list although other CTEK products are so I shot them and email with this inquiry.

Edit: Odyssey response:
Hello Bruce,
Thank you for contacting EnerSys/ODYSSEY.
Yes, as a long term maintainer, the CTEK 4.3 would work great. Just use the snowflake setting ALWAYS. .
Sincerely, Kathy Mitchell

Since I keep my cars a long long time..... a long life battery is within my scope of maintenance desires as I hate to deal with crap like this. Today, given my Duralast Gold is acting a bit flaky, I now have jumpers in my trunk.... something I should not have to carry around.

Would we need brackets in our 997.2 cars? There is a post here that notes our cars can hold them without additional brackets but I don't know if his battery was the same size and or his car was a 997.1 and therefore different in some way. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...s-present.html

Size of this battery below:

Price: $268 (Autozone Duralast Gold w/core discount $180)
Pulse (5 second)
Hot Cranking Amps (PHCA)1250
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)72320Hr
Nominal Capacity (Ah)69
Reserve Capacity Minutes130
Dimensions L x W x H (in)10.91 x 6.89 x 7.5
Weight (lbs)48.0
Weight (kg)21.8

Peace

Yea, that is probably what I should do...... I do over analyze things a bit. If this Duralast really dies shortly, Autozone will give me another so I won't go out and buy another brand just yet. This stuff just ticks me off as my wife's Duralast Gold died a few weeks ago under warranty..... so I am wondering about these Duralast Gold batteries. I have always had good luck with just every-day batteries as I drive my cars and it appears that if you drive your car, they last me about 6-7 years. Now I am driving short distances.... maybe that is it.

I just can't believe there is no battery that will last 10 years..... I got bucks, I want to buy one.

Peace

I use an Optima 34R redtop. Note though that AGM batteries need to be at least 80% charged all the time, thus if the car is not used often it needs to be on a Ctek charger (in the AGM mode).

From the CTEK site . https://smartercharger.com/faq/#batteryknowledge6

Q. I have an AGM battery. Do I charge it in snowflake mode?
A. It depends. Optima and Hawker recommend snowflake mode. If there is no indication on the battery, use car mode for batteries over 14Ah or MC mode for batteries under 14Ah.

Right! Exactly what my post said for Optima batteries - Ctek snowflake (AGM) setting.

I've been using the 48-720 Odyssey battery for over a year now. Works perfectly. Easy to install. took me 10 minutes. literally plug n play. Feels like it weighs quite a bit less than the giant OEM battery. I've run Odyssey batteries over the years in multiple cars, PWC, boats, etc. They use virgin lead. Best battery you can buy, IMO.

The correct battery size/group for the 997 is the H7/94R. H6, H7 and H8 will all fit and are all the same W and H only difference in size is L - H6 is about 1.5 inches shorter than H7 and the H8 is about 1.5 inches longer. Some folks have used the H8 although it may need some work on the last hold down clamp hole. Since you've been using the Duralast look at the Duralast AGM H7 - 850 CCA while the Bosch is rated at 800 CCA.

Optima just announced a DIN sized Yellow Top - available this spring. Should be a direct drop-in H7 size so no need for alternate hold downs. Have't seen any specs yet.

I own an Odyssey for my G-Wagen. Great battery. But if it fails before the three year warranty, getting it tested and replaced is a pain in the a$$.

Something I put together about 14 months ago anticipating the need to change out my 6 year old wet cell Interstate that lives on a CTEK when not being driven and the battery is still going strong.

Another great thing about the Odyssey's is that I've never had one just "die" all at once at the end of it's life expectancy like standard lead acid's do. Every Odyssey I've ever owned just slowly gets weaker. So I know waaayyy ahead of time when I need to replace it.

At the Odyssey dealer they can take your suspect battery and run it though some reconditioning cycles. You can also do it yourself: http://www.odysseybattery.com/docume..._Procedure.pdf

I think this procedure can be used with other AGM batteries.

I had to sacrifice my G-Wagen Odyssey and was able to later revive it using this procedure. Seems like I had to take it through about 4 cycles before it got back to normal. Still in service today...8 years old now and in my son's project car.

Porsche 2009 911 - Interstate Since 2011
Mercedes 2000 G500 - Advance auto AGM Since 2014
Porsche 2011 958 - Advance Auto AGM since 2017
Camry Hybrid 2016 - Factory battery.
