I've asked the same question here but haven't seen a good answer yet. There are one owner cars out there with spotty maint. records that look like farm animals lived in them and there are multiple owner cars in mint condition with perfect service records.

Because people are weird and have notions about what a car "should" be. I rarely own performance cars for more than a year, but during my time, I always do a thorough detail, a full paint correction, bring all service up to date, don't go over 3,000 rpm until 15 minutes into the drive, and don't drive the car less than 7 miles before arriving at my destination. Most Porsche owners, especially those in 997's which are more of an enthusiast model these days, are similarly careful. No high school kid is going to buy a 60k 997.2 and be doing burnouts out of the driveway on a cold engine.

A lot of these get traded in shortly after purchase: 911's aren't that practical, and a lot of people realize that stop and go traffic isn't that great when driving a manual. I traded in my 991 after 3 months of ownership: the PDK wasn't for me, and I wanted to upgrade my 2001 Tacoma, which was getting up there in years and about to go over 200k miles. During my 991 time, I babied the car, did another service, and did a full opti-coat pro application. I left the car better than I found it. If someone walked away from the car upon seeing the 2nd owner only had her for 3 months, it was their loss.

For what it's worth.. I'd say don't rush in to buy, once you have decided on what you want take your time, there are always new cars coming up for sale and if you spend some extra time comparing specifications, value, condition, etc you should end up with a better 997. Looking/ searching for the right slice of Pork is part of the fun, I'd even go so far as to email the main dealers/specialists with your wish list and budget as there are often car's sitting under the radar, customers cars that want a change, Px's about to come in. etc
Happy hunting.

Apparently it is out of range now for a CPO? Someone mentioned a date in the thread and said it was improbable that CPO was offered. They do offer a Platinum (?) aftermarket warranty for 3K.

Here is quick list / summary of keypoint gen-2 changes for the S/4S models you are comparing/looking at
● New redesigned more modern front and rear with led lights and modified exterior mirrors.
● Direct Fuel Injection engines, more power better economy and reduced emissions. 385hp (+ 30bhp/15 lb-ft, slightly lower down the rev range) 0-100mph 9.9 instead of 10.7 seconds - (manual).
● Chassis, bodyshell and aerodynamic enhancements
● Improved manual gearbox, up-shift indicator aiding economy.
● Drive-off Assist now standard.
● New much improved PCM control unit – with touch screen + new hi-tech options (USB/Bluetooth).
● Improved interior touches
● New optional extras available, including PDK, PASM Sports Suspension etc.
● New 19-inch alloy wheel design
● 2WD has enhanced PSM as 4WD models
911 (4WD only) Carrera 4, 4S Coupé, Cabriolet, Targa4/4S
● Model specific cosmetic enhancements including classic rear red reflector strip
● Mechanical limited-slip rear diff. Now standard on: C4 /4S Coupé & Cabriolet Targa 4/S models.
● PTM (Porsche Traction Management standard).

Just to add PDK is best for gen-2 resale, but if you enjoy a manual then generally they achieve a lower sticker price.

What is "Drive Off Assist"? Seems like the only thing you really need to assist you driving off is a clutch pedal, gas pedal, and you sitting in the seat in-front of them LOL

The dumbing down of actual driving ability drives me nuts - park assist, brake assist, drive off assist, lane change assist, smart cruise control, etc...it's all completely ridiculous. They think they're making the cars safer with all of these features, but what they're really doing is making it more likely that people will do "distracted driving" since the cars have all of these features that will alert them to something happening around them while they're looking down at their phone, eating their lunch, or putting on their makeup. Anyone who needs all that crap should just look forward to the day when they can get in their people pod and punch in the destination - there can be 2 lines of pods in the right hand lane and the rest of the road can be used for actual cars with actual drivers.

Drive-off Assist now standard.
I think that the little bugger thing on manual transmissions that messes with the throttle response when you first take off so snowflakes don't stall it or get herky jerky. There is a switch on the clutch pedal mechanism thats defeated by taping the plunger down or I think just taking it off and putting the two contacts together.

Improved manual gearbox, up-shift indicator aiding economy.
I've never seen anything like this light up on my dash or PCM.

Except you can't bypass it on a .2 or it results in an error message, only on a .1.

I thought maybe it was a thing that keeps a manual transmission car from rolling backwards on a hill as you try to take off.

Yes the .2 has the clutch assist for starting on hills but the .1 does not.

Drive-off Assist: nothing to do with clutch or throttle. applies 30% rear brake pressure on hills using PSM system... detected by 3rd axis accelerometer not found in .1... as soon as front wheel speed sensor detects forward motion rear brakes are released.

I have that annoying little triangle upshift indicator in my 2010 4S Cab, and I'd love to defeat it but I can't see an option to disable this. It shows up just to the upper right corner of the MPH indicator, but with Fabspeed Sports Headers, 200-cel cats and PSE, why on earth would I EVER shift below 5,000 rpm ...

I've driven a MT for most of my life, and I still love this feature!

I agree, it works pretty good. I've had other cars where it did not.

$40K for a relatively high mileage 2005 997.1 seems high. If you can stretch your budget, then definitively get the 2010 997.2

I would also get the 2010. I think the 05 makes a lot of sense if significantly cheaper. I'm a big believer in the 997.1 as a pure enthusiast drivers car but the price needs to reflect that.
