Thanx..... interesting about how the oil level affected the ticking.... I will keep this in mind over the next few months.

Wow. I've always kept my oil level a full mark below full. Hmmmmmm.

My 125K mile engine makes a ticking noise only when I come off the auto-x course or track. During regular everyday street driving it doesn't make any more noise than usual. The ticking noise speeds up and slows down relative to engine rpm. It seems to be concentrated on the left side of the engine. I contribute this to a potentially weak hydraulic lifter tappet or two that probably aren't holding pressure sufficiently so at extended high rpms they are starting to float or bounce maybe. Regardless what they are doing they are noisy. After I shut the car off in between runs and start it back up again for the next run, they will tick loudly for a couple seconds and then go silent, I believe because the oil pressure has a chance to get them operating normally again.

I'm going to install an LN deep sump with the windage tray and baffles before the next auto-x event to see if perhaps aeriation and starvation of the oil might be a factor. If that doesn't alleviate the lifter noise then I maybe I'll just have to see about replacing them.
