^ Porsche tax.
As my local Porsche friends like to say, it isn't just a gouge, it's an f-you.

I preordered the first announced wireless CarPlay head unit a few months ago (Alpine ILX-107), it was delayed months but finally shipped last week. I installed it this weekend, and I'm super pleased with how it came out. The utility of not having to take the phone out of my pocket and still getting CarPlay is great, and I have no complaints yet with the ILX-107.
Now I just need to hardwire my radar detector.
Also I looked into the Porsche Classic Radio and the back has the same looking connector as the OEM connectors. I asked the parts department people and they said it's compatible with the early (non MOST) 996es. They just don't claim to be compatible with 996 since there's that transition right in the middle. My 2002 996TT doesn't have MOST either, but does have Bose.

^ good info, I thought that might be the case. I'd almost be tempted if the price wasn't so **** you.
Those double-DIN setups look enticing, as well -- but after having the GT3 center console delete, I don't think I could go back to losing the legroom.

I think the Classic Radio probably doesn't have output to your amplifier, if you have the Bose system. You would most likely have to use the amp in the radio. I was told by someone at a dealership when I asked this question (does it fit 996?), and was told to be patient, that something is coming out next year that will be a good upgrade. I'm not in a hurry, though I love the Car Play in my GTI and would love to be able to have that in the TT.

Does this Alpine have output to your amplifier in the frunk?

Yeah I soldered up the Alpine harness to an adapter which plugs into the factory harnesses. I have a 2002 Bose which didn't have MOST, and with this wiring I utilize the amplifier in the frunk. Works perfectly.

Does this arrangement provide for use of the cd changer? The Alpine has no cd capability, as you know.

It does not retain the functionality of the stock CD changer. That wasn't a priority for me however, I don't use CDs anymore.

I'm not sure I dig that Alpine unit.... Yes, wireless carplay would be nice, but I absolutely HATE not having a real volume ****. Plus its's over double the price of the Sony Carplay unit?
Note that with the Sony, you can still stream music from your phone to the car wirelessly using bluetooth. You don't have to take the phone out and connect it to the system. But you do need to connect it if you want FULL carplay integration.
