2004 996 Turbo Upgrade Stereo or keep it Stock?
#16
What do you mean when you say entire audio installation? Speakers still use regular speaker wire that connect to the stock amp. The optic connections are between AMP and head unit. So if you are like me and replaced the amp and head unit at the same time, all you need to do is run RCA cables (3 in my new setup) between the AMP and head unit. Not a very difficult task.
My after market head unit (i really need to refinish that yellow CF)

I have seen that head unit before in another 996 Porsche. If I was feeling extremely lazy and just wanted to copy what you did, do you have a parts list and recommended suppliers you could post here? I'm thinking that would include the head unit, the AMP, connecting cables, and the mounts. I am guessing that the mounts might come as a kit of some sort.
Thanks,

The stock Bose speakers suck - so - I replaced the amp - and did a new connection between the amp and head unit. then wired each speaker into the amp.

I am not sure that I want to bother with a double DIN conversion. I have a lot of cars and won't be racking up the miles in this Turbo, plus, I have a single DIN Sony unit I bought for a BMW a couple of years ago but never installed (I sold the vehicle before changing out the audio). This is the same audio unit I swapped into my BMW Z3M Coupe, and it works great, for my occasional purposes. It has bluetooth for my smartphone, a mic, satellite radio (which I don't use), and has a USB port for MP3 files. Since I already own this never-used-before unit, it would be great if I could use it in the Porsche. I have a mount I can use to keep my Samsung Edge 7 smartphone at eye level, and if I want to use the phone for navigation, I'm satisfied with that screen. I have android auto in another car, and quite honestly I find it underwhelming.
Do you or anyone have a suggestion for a relatively cheap installation of that head unit I already have, into the space currently occupied by the existing Porsche head unit with the MOST fiberoptic system? I think I can probably live with the factory speakers, given how often I am going to listen to music in this car.
Thanks, all!

Depends on your budget. Many 996tt owners have deeper pockets then me so my audio upgrade was on a budget. Extremely satisfied with the results. The OEM audio was TERRIBLE (my oem amp had 2 blown channels), I was not looking to get top of the line audiophile sound quality, I was just looking for a good upgrade to what came with the car.
- Amp is Soundstream PN5.640D Picasso Nano (thanks Vogz for the recommendation)
- I am an android user, so double din options were limited to what is supported by Android Auto, Sony XAV-AX100 came out right in time
- 3 RCA cables were bought from amazon
- Double din kit is from Suncoast, don't bother with any other kit, trust me just buy this https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X6DDIN.html
- stock Bose speakers
I know people complain about the stock Bose speakers, but after you upgrade the amp and head unit, the stock speakers are x5 better. I have no plans to upgrade them.
Let me know if you have other questions.

I am assuming you did this installation yourself, and that most other people could do it, without going to a car audio shop?
Thanks!

Do you know how too use a 9v battery to figure out which speaker cables go to what speaker? Cause if you don't, I would recommend using an audio shop

Yes. I'm TERRIBLE with audio and I did the install myself. Full disclosure, my car does not have MOST since it is a 2001, but everything I did is what you need to do. Replace the optics between amp and head unit with RCA cables.

I'm selling Porsche LOGO screen savers for $87.99 each. For $55.00 more I will mail it to you in an envelope.
For an additional $450.00 I will include a 9 Volt battery with Very detailed speaker wiring instructions, PLUS My own book called "How to wire Porsche speakers for Dummies, Porsche speaker wiring and how it's Positively so much harder than regular other car speaker wiring".
Sorry it's a long title.
cheers
