Default Power Loss

Driving on the freeway at 70mph all of a sudden no power all lights came on had to get the car towed. What could it be? Newbie here, it turns over but does not start.
Help??

Fuel pump, ECU? You need to diagnose with a Durametric and see if there are any fault codes.

don't have a Durametric any other way to check the car before i take it into a shop, probably will have to tow it in.

Reads like a fuel pump (or relay or fuse) quit. When you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump run.

If it runs but the engine cranks but doesn't fire and the fuel level is about half way down it could be a fuel siphon jet hose has failed and the fuel pump can't pull fuel out of the tank (which has two basins and a siphon jet in each one).

Unless it is a fuse and you have a spare just get it towed in and looked at come Monday.

macster is right in that the hose "splitting" is often the actual cause of a fp failure. still in the couple of times I've had them fail, the car would at least start, sputter and run momentarily but would stall out.

failing fp's are so common, so agree, that is the best "guess". either way, yeah it's gotta be towed or r&r'd on the spot.

52k miles still reeling from this. Checked the fuses I am just hoping it is not the fuel pump.
Anything else I can check in the meantime please let me know.

If you hear the fuel pump run when you turn on the key and the fuel level is high the only thing I can think of would be the crankshaft position sensor has quit.

If this doesn't work the DME can't know when to trigger fuel injector pulses or spark.

Not sure how you can "test" this from behind the steering wheel. Maybe (maybe) if when cranking the engine if the tach needle doesn't budge any at all? Don't crank the engine too long or you can cook the starter.

I can hear the fuel pump I when the ignition is turned on. I guess the crankshaft position sensor would be the next thing to check
Is it possible to hear the fuel pump with a bad fuel pump relay?

No, if the fp relay is bad, you wouldn't hear the pump at all.

Where are you located? Maybe someone with a Durametric or code reader near you can help?
