If you have a budget in the $40k range and 80k miles is within reason, I'm thinking you can do better than rolling the dice on what may prove to be a costly fix. Things like the rear wing rams that are common failure points on the 996tt will likely play some role in any 15 year old car purchase, but a mystery leak needn't be part of the deal.

Once you've put in the time with an owner, done a PPI, other research it can get really hard to walk away, but if you've got $40k+ you're ready to throw at this thing, hand on, you'll find one without a wildcard. Also, with warming weather coming across the country there should be some more active trading going on in the coming weeks.

That's how I was feeling. I had a ppi performed at Dumonts Porsche in Oklahoma City. They specialize in air cooled but a general Porsche place. The owner said something like this wouldn't steer him away from getting the car because it's such a small area, and to just keep an eye out for anything during oil changes.

carfax, schmarfax. what is the redflag? a "rear impact" stating that the car was drivable, or the fact it had 6 owners in 16 years?

oh.. an oil leak.. yeah, thats not good unless it can be easily sourced. if it IS a leaking head gasket? yeah,.. no thanks..

otherwise, that appears to be one extremely well sorted car. all the mods are time honored and "proper"..and even with 19" forgestars on it. at least they're cf10s, the best looking ones lol

Is there a o ring for a coolant pipe on the driver side front of the engine that is prone to leaking that could cause the look of a leak?
