Default 996tt - 2nd to 3rd hard shifting

Hi, have question on shifting from 2nd to 3rd when over 5k rpm, shifter won't go in. At first thought it was me, as car is new to me. I read some comments in the gt forums this is a known problem caused by shifting to fast, others mention it's caused by worn motor/transmission mounts, shifter cables. Car is completely stock, has 12k (easy) miles so don't think anything is worn. Seems hard to believe i'm shifting to fast. Is this normal?
Am thinking about swapping shifter to a 997 shifter. Would shifting problem be worst?

mileage wouldnt matter if the clutch has been slipped a ton or the gears have been missed a lot. typically if it wont go into gear its the syncros going bad. does it do it all the time and under 5k as well?

sounds like clutch isn't disengaging correctly given the RPM scenario...however trans mount and cables & shifter alignment should be checked

Issue only happens at high rev above 5k, car has not been driven hard. I would think if it were a clutch issue, problem would occur all the time. Maybe being 13 yrs old the mounts or cables need replacement?

5k+RPM no matter the load/throttle? ...sounds like pressure plate failure IMHO
there is also the chance the hydraulics are failing/need bleeding and not getting full disengagement, high PRM amplifying the situation
If you're able to, try rev-matching shifts and see how the car responds

my04996TT you have received some great advice..

I will offer "my opinion" based on owners that have had similar issues...

I would not be driving the car..

2) Secure a factory shifter adjustment tool and re align your shifter cables.

3) Inspect and bleed our clutch slave cylinder. How does your pedal feel thru the range of motion?

4) Inspect your transmission mount for tears.. This will impact your higher RPM/Speed shifting

5) Rob in his last post has come up with the most likely failure! A failed diaphragm (it's cracked) due to heat and age OR from someone that rode the pedal in traffic.

I wouldn't put any miles on the car.. If you have damaged the syncro's a tranny rebuild is in your future.. Sad but very true..

2nd to 3rd issues are most prone to wear in oft tracked cars that tend to wear 3rd prematurely. hardly likely it's a synchro or even gear issue in a 12k mile '03. if it were an '01 or '02 all bets would be off lol.

if bet on a misalignment and or as the experts here have mentioned, clutch and/or hydraulic issue disallowing full engagement.

once you isolate and remedy your issue, a 997 ssk aint gonna hurt.

Okay great, thanks for all the suggestions.. The 3 times i've noticed the issue is under load going up hills. Normal driving clutch seems fine, though have only driven about 300 miles. Car is hibernating for the winter, so i'll be spending some quality time troubleshooting. Thanks again.

I had a similar issue during my track day a Laguna. After the second or third session it started to get hard to make the 2 to 3 shift on the main straight. I had to just hold it and it would go in with out grinding. I suspect I have miss-adjusted cables that changed a little with all the heat soak. Has not done it all since the track day. I have the adjuster bracket but have not taken the time to re-adjust. Also just replaced my 65k motor mounts with new Porsche RS units. That may also help. Good luck with yours, hope its not the Trans $$$$$.

Sounds like the same issue I"m having, won't go in 3rd when there is load. Don't experience any grinding. Will check mounts first, then move on to other areas that everyone suggested.
To check the shifter cables since the console needs to come out, might as well swap over to a 997 shifter. Am sure this will takes a few hrs, Thks.

Kevin's advice & suggestions are good ones. Mine was hard-to-shift between third and fourth under load/hard acceleration.

This was the cause:

Apologies for the being naive, but can you expound on the pic a little more? What part was the culprit of the hard to shift from 3rd-4th?

If you look at the last close up picture, you can see the cracks.. This condition is a Sycro eater.. The clutch will work off and on> however not at 80 to 100%..

Depending on the climate, one can hear clicks on engagement coming from under the car.

I see now. Is this the "pressure plate?"
