normal. if it goes down from there to maybe a solid 13 w/full load over the next few months. still normal. 13.8 with no load is perfect.

13 w a full load is fine also.

That is a good sign.

The previous (bad) alternator that I just swapped out, was consistently putting out 13.4V while engine was running, but more recently dropped to below 13, which was when I called it off lol. Willing to bet it's just a bad voltage regulator. Will probably get it repaired and see if anyone needs an alternator.

a rebuilt is dubious. a replaced vr is ok, but if and when it turns out to be the alt. some will have spent all that time replacing a $40 component part, from a $600 part from a once $120k+ car. when longer term, simply replacing the $600 part would be best. rebuilt alts are a dubious proposition, vr's less so,.. but the alt itself is often not far behind, in its impending and imminent failure.

or so i am told lol

The most recent voltage measures through my handheld voltmeter (with engine running as well as not-running) has convinced me that at the very least, that the voltage regulator is on its way out, and is not properly charging the car while the engine is running. And since I'm going to pay for the labor to get in there anyways, might as well replace the entire alternator too at the same time.

If for whatever reason there's still a draw after alternator swap, then I'll look into replacing the ignition switch. Will have master tech check the draw on anything else he can find, while the car is in the shop.

Will report back in a week or two
Where did you find the alt for $250? I'm looking to replace mine and shopping around.

Thanks

I am not s mechanic, but I play as one on the weekend....

but do note how many times I used the word cheap....

See my experience below re bat vs alternator. A cheap trickle charger has cured the dead Pcar bat-alternator checked out.

Your bat may be fine after replacing the alternator.....

My Tundra toe vehicle just had its second alternator from new. Indy Toy tech said the replacement was a cheap part, he replaced it with a 130am Toyota part.

I have had a cheap Harbor Freight bat tester for heater now for my fleet-saves a lot of frustration. The truck, had a family new Optima. I tested the bact show down on voltage but not bad. We suspected the alternator which it was. Actually, the powerful Optima was the thing that got me home-electrics were failing as I drove.

Thanks for sharing the info. I've never heard of them and after checking their site they have 2 Bosch listed for the 996 TT and they are both remans listed as 120amp. One is $289 (Automatic Trans) and the other is $384 (Manual.)

Do you happen to have the part number from your order?

Try Bosch AL0815N part number. Mine's a 6speed manual, and I'm 100% positive that it's 150Amps. It claims it's all-new, even with sticker and warranty booklet, etc.

That pulled up. Nice deal but it looks like you have a 2005-2006. Mine is a 04 so I'm not sure that would work. Thanks for sharing the info.

Actually, my car's 2001 model year, but from the research I've done, even 997s use similar if not same specs. All in all, this model works on my car flawlessly.

That's great to hear. Looking at pictures of all of them they look the same. Assuming the pictures are correct. I don't know why they would have different numbers for auto verses manual. I copied and pasted the writing below from their site. Sounds like you have a lifetime warranty too. Amazing...

Alternators & Starters w/ Part Number Not Ending In "N": 24 months; Alternators & Starters w/ Part Number Ending In "N": Lifetime Warranty for Non-Commercial Passenger Vehicles;

Replaced mine last year on my 03 996 NA cab. Direct plug and play, I paid $265 at Parts Geek.

I do know that there is supposedly a difference between tiptronic versus manual transmission alternators, but I do not know the specific differences.

The AL0815N part did not say automatic/tiptronic, so I gave it a shot.

the warranty did look good to me too. And it being factory all-new was enticing.

The only difference is the pulley. The alternator for 6 speed manual cars has a clutch pulley so the belt will not bind during high RPM shifts. The Tip version has a solid pulley.
