Default Strange vehicle registration data

Looking at my vehicle registration papers today and noticed (after nearly 2 years) that my 2005 996 TurboS is listed as a 997 911 model. I know 2005 was a transition year for Porsche from the 996 to the 997. I can't help but wonder if all the thousands of pieces of data on cars and models is entered manually by the DMV or does it come from the manufacturer based on the VIN. I thought the latter; and if entered by the manufacturer, why would my 05 TTS be listed as a 997?

In my state, the personal property tax is based on a depreciated value from the MSRP when new. I'm wondering if I'm being charged for a 997 TurboS instead of a 996 TurboS; but I'm also wondering if Porsche called everything in 2005 a 997 model for purposes of what they supplied the DMV. Does anyone else with a 2005 have their car listed as a 997 on their registration?

Maybe just a typo but wanted to check here before I call DMV.

You possibly got overcharged on tax if they went with a presumptive tax value law like they do in Texas.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

the presumptive value of my car was $24,500 so they clearly don't take market value into consideration. I just made sure I showed them a bill of sale for $24000, so I didn't pay the taxes on what I really bought the car for.

Not sure if I would be gloating on forums about tax fraud.

You're talking about sales tax, the one time tax you pay when you buy the car. I'm referring to personal property tax which is paid annually (in my state) to renew vehicle license tags. It's a depreciated value tax. So a new $30,000 Honda owner may pay $500 the first year but I pay about $35 on my 79 SC because it's fully depreciated.

The taxable value drops every year from production. If MSRP on my TTS was say $140k, after 11 years maybe it's taxed at say $60k. That's why I'm afraid they started with the 997 price as the initial basis.
