I just became the proud owner of a 2004 996 Turbo Coupe with just over 40K on the odometer. It's very nicely optioned with the X50 package, Tiptronic, and full carbon interior trim including the rear center console and a carbon-leather steering wheel. Color is the special extra cost Slate Grey Metallic. Other good news was the PO had the decency to shoe it with Michelin PS N3's, and they still have lots of tread left. Spousal acceptance factor was very mixed - didn't want me to get it and probably secretly hates me for buying it, but now admits it's awesome and is claiming it's hers. Go figure.
Condition is excellent and most importantly for me, it's bone stock. I'm addressing a few minor maintenance issues the PO neglected, and hoping to learn more about the 996TTs from the knowledge base of this forum.

More than I should have. Nearly scared me off, reading about water pipes coming unglued, tip gaskets leaking, and the list of other well-documented maladies. But mine survived what I hope was a pretty thorough PPI (minor cosmetic issues were most prevalent on the report), and the minor maintenance items it needs I can pretty much take care of myself.
I thought now is as good of a time as ever may exist to buy one of these awesome cars. My sense is that the really nice ones are likely to maintain their value or even trend upward. Plus, it was almost unbelievable to know that I was buying my car for under $0.30 on the dollar of its original list price. There's simply no other car available for the same money that offers anything near what the 996TT offers (IMO).
