Light Savers for Rear Turbo Tail Lights

5 Attachment(s)
I just got my Light Savers from "Engineerboy100 Your Car Care Companion [porschetaillight@gmail.com]"

I am pretty happy with them.
If your tail light mounting tabs are cracked and or missing like mine were these can save you $$.
They fit great and look better then the metal reinforcements that I made.

I found that putting the top screw in first made it easier to mount them.

To make sure that there was clearance I slid his business card between the engine cover and LS after mounting them, so mine had at least 0.15" clearance. We will see if that is enough. If not it looks like the bracket can be adjusted in the fender.

Carlo_Carrera 03-19-2016 06:42 PM

The look good.

How do I order a pair? Paypal to his e-mail address? Cost?

32krazy! 03-19-2016 06:44 PM

i have a set as well. just need my car back from vegas to install them! :)

Your Turbo went to Vegas without you? That doesn't seem fair.

In one of the threads here or maybe Pelican?? He said that the first (some number I think 13?) would be $29.95 and then $79.00 afterwards. I sent him $30 that day with PayPal and said whenever he felt that the product was ready send me a set.
I figured it was a gamble, like a kick starter campaign, if he never got it right it was some $$ for his effort, if it went well good for me. And everyone else with cracked/broken mounting tabs.
I just got them today. With a note that said that he was going to put something about the prerelease/first release offer up on eBay?

Cheers,

I think this is the thread. Maybe post 38 amongst the 40 - 50 posts of "Mine is bigger then yours" "Nuh-uh Mine's bigger and original so better" "Well I have more money" etc...

Found it
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...-points-3.html

993GT 03-19-2016 11:42 PM

a thread like that on the 996TT forum?!?! ;)
IIRC he started his own thread, and deleted as he wasn't a sponsor.. but could be wrong...
Either way, Ill probably buy up a few sets if he allows the RL price...
Cheers!

I hope he's still honoring the RL pricing. This is what he said:
"Don't worry about missing the sale, any long standing member here will be give the $29.95 price even after the promotion period. It's my way of giving back to the forum for all the years I have received help with different car problems."

993GT 03-20-2016 10:31 AM

I'm not crazy! lol, was sure I remembered a "RL' price... thanks for posting the quote
If still honouring that offer, I'll take 3 sets...RL PM + Paypal?
Cheers,
Rob

There is a thread on Renntech post 28 & 29 talk about the discount release.

crash41301 03-20-2016 12:57 PM

From $30 to $80 huh. Got to love that porsche tax...

At $30 this sounded great. At $80 I'll continue with what I have.

Lucid Moment 03-20-2016 01:19 PM

I'll take a set at 30 as well.

993GT 03-20-2016 01:23 PM

I have no problem with there being a fair profit margin(remember its small market/volume), that IS BUSINESS...but promising a price means promising a price....
for me at this time....3 at $30, 0@80

That's exactly what I remember as well, I asked for a freight quote to Aussie back in Jan and he said he'll get it to me within a couple of days but I'm still waiting. Surely he's a man of his word.

I PM'd him last night but haven't heard back from him.

danspach 03-20-2016 05:08 PM

Easy to buy a set at $30...but to see it jump from $30 to $80. Impressive.

Guess I"ll keep an eye on this thread.

James88 03-20-2016 05:14 PM

Meanwhile l did this to stop the cracks from getting worse.
I drilled a couple of small holes in the base of the lights and secured with zip ties through the holes that were already there in the body work, works just fine

Just take the lights off and use 2part epoxy on the cracks.

993GT 03-23-2016 12:33 PM

saw them on ebay, wanted 3 sets (out of the 13 available...) but didn't want to take away from many others here who could use them....I'll wait for the Rennlist price to be honoured.

cbracerx 03-23-2016 02:18 PM

Waiting for a way to purchase at the Rennlist price.

Very considerate of you as usual Rob. My rennlist price was honored and they're on their way.

993GT 03-23-2016 06:12 PM

didn't mean it to come across that way, but thanks Jim :)
not to sound like an a$$ but it's just a shame that only 13 sets were made available after the initial hype and promise...but I'm sure everyone else will just wait for the promised RL price :corn: I don't need any but have a few 6TT/GT2's that could benefit long-term..
Cheers,
Rob

crash41301 03-23-2016 07:53 PM

I also dont mind a fair profit. However 30 isnt a sale price compared to 80. Either 30 is a small attempt to honor the original promise knowing that costs are higher than anticipated and he is losing profit, or there is a profit margin so huge I simply can live without it. Its not as if my lights are falling off right now after all.

Kevinmacd 03-24-2016 10:52 PM

Got mine today, even though i used a 2part epoxy to fix the lights, used these to reinforce the repair. They fit fine, and do as advertised.

craig001 03-25-2016 09:53 AM

He is doing the $29.95 ($35 shipped) through today, Friday 25March2016. I contacted him yesterday about the Rennlist offer. These are relisted on eBay at $79.95 but you is not doing the Best Offer tab even though it got into the relisted parts after the original listing.

Third-Reef 03-25-2016 11:21 AM

How do we get hold of him to get the $30 price today?

jimq 03-25-2016 03:51 PM

They are $64.95 on Ebay plus $5 shipping

I used the porschetaillight@gmail.com from the card pictured in the original post. I saw that he dropped the price $10 on eBay. Did not notice if he got rid of the Best Offer button. My set arrived First Class USPS yesterday so he shipped the same day I paid and ordered. You could email hin and ask - could not hurt to try.

I haven't been following all of the threads too closely but I'm pretty sure this is the email several people have been hoping to/waiting to see.

Nice job by you Clint for making it clear to everyone.

I received my pair yesterday and look forward to installing them tonight. Once the queue dies down, I'll probably order another set just to have an extra.

Third-Reef 03-28-2016 12:49 PM

Just ordered mine. Didn't think i needed them until i was replacing my spark plugs and the left taillight came off with my bumper.

Thank-you for extending your offer Clint
Will order up later today.

They are probably like the OP on the first page. Seems the 996tt came with two different tails screws. Most people have a torx wide head screw. My 2001 has only a washer and phillips head like couple posts above.... Doubt it matters.

Got mine, fit isn't that good. The trunk touches at the bottom. Made some modifications to the back but still overall too thick for my liking. It's 1/8" think molding, should be 1/4". I gave Clint some feedback, might try the metal ones if they're thinner.

There are adjustment screws on the light mounts. Loosen them and slide the mount down a little to provide more clearance.

Yeah... if you want your lights to sit 1/2" below the body line. :(

That adjustment is for adjusting the light body itself. This is just a piece of plastic that sits on top of the original mount, which is sitting on the body, all you'd be doing is lowering the tail light.

BTW.. I actually have these and when I installed them have the same issue.

I have Light Savers installed on my car. The bracket I am referring to is purely to set the height of the light in relation to the 1/4 panel. It does not adjust the body panel in any way.

All you need is the light to sit 1/16" below the body line for clearance. One of my lights was set at that level by the factory. The other I adjusted myself. It is not even noticeable.

Actually that adjustnent can be used to lower to the rear bumper or raise the light to the upper fender, it also allows you to raise the light up towards the lid or move it down from the lid.
So not sure what your issue is.
By adjusting these the lights with the light savers sit almost exactly as they did without the light savers. The lights sit exactly like they should.

jeanmarcboilard 04-02-2016 09:00 PM

I adjusted my lights a bit but wanted to keep them flush with the body, deck lid, and bumper. Light savers are still touching the deck lid slightly at the bottom.

You could also try extending the bump stops on the underside of the rear deck lid a little by rotating them counter clockwise a 1/4 turn to gain yourself some space.

James88 04-02-2016 10:46 PM

Well I'm in Aussie, I ordered mine about 12 or 13 days ago and still haven't received them :(. No tracking number, only customs number. Clint said he'll send another set if I dont receive them.

Sounds like the LS aren't for you.
Did you also adjust your frunk hood even with the bumper? Porsche sets it lower to stop that loud whistle that can happen when they are even.
My lights were already lower then the recessed fender lip. I thought that might be for the same reason as the frunk hood.

ewc 08-11-2017 10:14 AM

I purchased the Light Saver for my C4S and I'm also having fitment issues with the bottom of the trunk touching the LS. I tried removing the lights and dropping down the light mounting brackets per the video. I also raised up the trunk bump stops as much as possible (raise them too much, and the lid won't latch closed).

Right now, I think I have the right light's mounting brackets dropped as low as possible and the LSs still touch the bottom portion trunk when closed -- as in, I can't even slide a credit card through the gap.

I'm going to fiddle more with the mounting brackets to see if I can get more clearance, but right now, I'm a bit frustrated at what I expected to be a 10 minute install. :banghead:
