Beautiful block that’s for sure. Interesting Porsche required the newer 997 Cup R/RSR blocks to be Made in Germany, after outsourcing them for years. It’s a nuance I’m sure not many are privy to, but I totally believe it, thanks for sharing that picture
I bought that case in 2017. It's a 997.2 dual oil squirter Motorsport Mezger case. All the Mezger engine cases produced for Porsche Motorsport are manufactured in Germany. The cases used on the street cars are outsourced to other countries. 997GT3 street cases, even the dual oil squirter ones are made in Austria for example. My 997.2GT3 street car case looks identical to the 997.2 Motorsport case but it's made in Austria. I think Porsche wanted better quality oversight or perhaps tighter tolerances for the engine cases used in their racing program on the GT3Cup, R, RSR. Perhaps the aluminum alloy composition is slightly different in the Motorsport cases as they stamp it on the case. Hard to say for sure. The Motorsport cases can certainly be used on any Turbo build as they are inherently the same, albeit much more rare.

Another interesting angle of course is the early 964.. Mezger cases that are all stamped “Made in Germany” as well…
Your new information leads me to believe these were “Motorsports” cases too, before production was outsourced to Austria, France and Spain in MY2004
And begs the question, as you mention, of tighter tolerances and alloy composition differing from the “late” outsourced Mezgers
That is VERY interesting would love to hear thoughts

It was previously listed here: https://rmsothebys.com/en/home/priva...urbo-s/1344756
For $124,900 and did not sell. I'd say your guess it pretty spot on.

Case in point: https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/2...che-911-gt2-5/
This should be $350K by now; but barely breaking six figures
Absurdly low
