Would you want a mid-engine 911?
While I have owned and enjoyed several rear engined 911s I have always thought how great it would be to have that iconic 911 body on top of a mid-engine chassis. I do not need the rear seats so why not put the engine there?
The reason I bring this up is because there are reports the 2019 992 version of the 911 will be built on a Porsche designed modular platform that will accept both a rear or mid-engine layout so a mid-engine version of the 911 would be feasible.

The rear engine can only go so far forward without interfering with the half shafts that drive the rear wheels. So long as the engine is behind those half shafts the car is rear engined and will inherent those handling characteristics and the handicaps along with it.

Well, the wheel arches are there because the article says the track is wider, even using the same size tires as the 2017 car the body is from. As for the movement forward of the drivetrain, the article notes that it could be to make room for a hybrid power train (longer), which makes a lot of sense.
