Default Would you want a mid-engine 911?

While I have owned and enjoyed several rear engined 911s I have always thought how great it would be to have that iconic 911 body on top of a mid-engine chassis. I do not need the rear seats so why not put the engine there?

The reason I bring this up is because there are reports the 2019 992 version of the 911 will be built on a Porsche designed modular platform that will accept both a rear or mid-engine layout so a mid-engine version of the 911 would be feasible.

i thought they've been creeping the motor up closer to the middle for some time now, and that our true rear engine motored cars would soon be an anachronism anyway.. as steve just suggested, the cayman ..and true mid engine being the "future" of them all.

Does a Cayman look like a 911? They look nothing alike to me.

I am talking about the looks and size of a 911 with a mid-engine layout underneath. Sorta like the GT1 street car.

The rear engine can only go so far forward without interfering with the half shafts that drive the rear wheels. So long as the engine is behind those half shafts the car is rear engined and will inherent those handling characteristics and the handicaps along with it.

Yes, the arches are just for testing.

I'll gladly take a mid engined, gasoline powered 911 over that mission E crap.

No, because it wouldn't have the handling characteristics of a 911.

If I wanted the mid-engine handling experience, I'd buy a F430, or a 458 Italia, or a Lamborghini, or an R8.

Well, the wheel arches are there because the article says the track is wider, even using the same size tires as the 2017 car the body is from. As for the movement forward of the drivetrain, the article notes that it could be to make room for a hybrid power train (longer), which makes a lot of sense.

Noted.

But with all things being equal looks wise would you prefer a mid-engine or rear?

Not entirely true, you could redirect the power into the engine case and have the middle of the engine over the axle line.

Would prefer rear. But again other trends bother me more (size growth, wheelbase increase, etc.)
