Why is it crazy? 996TT prices have nothing to do with the 997TT. The people buying these high priced 996TTs want a pristine 996TT. They are not settling for 996TT because 997TTs are too expensive.

I'm not knocking on collectors that pay collector car money for low mileage/pristine examples. It's just that car that just sold, to me, is far from that level of car. I love the 996tt and 997tt, I guess I'm just getting salty that the 996tt is getting to the point where its no longer the bargain Porsche. I am glad my friends have been buying them so I can still enjoy them.

I think it's great that 996 Turbo values are moving upward. I hope the trend continues.

I think the 996tt to 997tt delta is intriguing and it's a measure worth watching.

If we weren't facing a future fraught with electrification and autonomous peril, which might upend the collectors car dynamics in a big way, I'd be tempted to forecast 996tts trading on top of 997tts (other things being equal) in the medium-long term - say, 5 to 10 years.

The way I see it in fifteen years the 997.2TT will be less desirable than the 996TT and the 997.1TT. The 997.2TT has no mezger and no manual. That makes it not very special IMHO.

As you correctly stated with electrification and some level of autonomy coming soon, coupled with almost no one knowing how to drive a manual in the near future who knows what car collecting will be like in twenty+ years.

I agree on that car, it was all about the color.

997.2TTS was PDK only. 997.2TT was available with a 6MT, but there were very few produced. A few examples:

996tt and 997tt pricing will eventually seek their own levels with buyers paying little attention to which year they were built in. It just takes decades for this to happen. But we're approaching that point very soon.

I watched prices for early 70s 911's, mid year 911's, and 911SC's completely invert. Initially prices of the 1984 and newer Carrera's were more than the prior model 911 SC's. Now the message within the Porsche community for SC's and Carreras is buy the best model you can find available. They are almost looked at as a single market now, unless there is some feature of the SC or Carrera that you value more. There are now some 964's selling for more than 993's despite the 993 being newer. The 993 prices are still carrying some premium, but it's not because the 993 is the newer model. It's the look of the body style, more power, revised suspension, and more modern AWD system. However, there are those that prefer the relative simplicity of the 964.

Anyone that thinks long term the 997TT will stay more costly than the 996TT simply because it's newer hasn't looked at historical Porsche model pricing. If the 997 does stay more expensive long term, it will be because the market values one of the features of that model more than the 996. However, my guess is the pricing for the models will be very similar in the next 5 years, with those wanting the analog features of the 996 paying a bit more to get it. I say 5 years because the cars are already approaching 20 years old. One thing the 996TTS has going for it long term is it's the last manual shift TTS. The 997TT can be bought as a manual, but not the 997TTS.
