That being said, there are those who do believe otherwise.

Personally, I believe cars in general, and Porsches in particular, were made to be driven. And driven cars get rock chips and the like - hiccups as described above do happen. So, to a buyer like me, that little issue isn't going to matter one bit. To the buyer of a car of the type you find listed here in the Craigslist thread, I wouldn't think it would matter.

But, there is another thread in here titled "The Prestige Thread" for the creme de la creme of the 996TT market. Those buyers are willing to pay a super premium for a "no stories" car. If you replace the front bumper cover, you no longer have a "no stories" car. It may be a minor issue, but if you have to 'splain it, then your car falls out of contention for "The Prestige Thread" buyer and you are resigned to the unwashed masses of buyers here in the Craigslist thread. So, I'm not disagreeing, but just understand to justify that top tier buyer money, those top tier buyers don't want to hear the words "accident", "repaint", "repair" or "replace" no matter how minor the damage or good the fix.

So, to the extent that your car is no longer appealing to those buyers, there is value hit. I'm not agreeing with that philosophy, I've just seen it raise its ugly head in this forum time and time again.
Well put!

Excellent advice for those who encounter having to do this on their own cars for future sales.

Wow, you ain't kidding. If that car checks out mechanically with no 'major' stories, I think $39.5K is a helluva deal!

So what kind of value do you guys believe an otherwise clean car with a bad title has?

This one has been sitting on Autotrader for months Looks clean, moderate mileage, 6 spd, but it was bought back by the original dealer 14 years and 75k miles ago.

What would the price have to be for you to seriously consider picking up a car with a title issue, even if the car completely passes a PPI and has been driven/owned for years without issue?

If that means it has a salvage title then I would say 25K with that mileage. The $34K is in the range of a non salvage car with similar mileage.

It's not a "salvage" title, but it has a record on the title of being a "lemon" or that it was bought back by the dealership.

Here's what autocheck says about it:
If after a reasonable amount of attempts the authorized dealer is unable to conform a new vehicle to any of its applicable express warranties, the manufacturer shall either provide its customer with a new vehicle of a like model line, if available, or otherwise comparable vehicle as a replacement, or accept the return of the vehicle from its customer and refund to its customer the purchase price paid for the vehicle less a reasonable allowance for use of the vehicle.

Probably what makes it hard is getting a loan for a car with a title like that. Thats more tghan likely the reason it's been listed for so long.

Not a 996TT but definitely in the price point...I am having a difficult time not pulling the trigger. I was set on a 996TT, but seeing this makes me reconsider. I did a little research, no stories...no paint work, owner is open to a PPI.

I saw this online as well and my thoughts were the same...$25,000 and that is if the car is in good condition otherwise. It's not uncommon to see clean titled 996TT's with similar mileage going for 28-32k at auction. With that being said, why would you buy a lemon/buyback to save a couple of thousand bucks. Since they hold their value, entry prices to these cars is not the big killer, shop visits are! Especially if you are buying a known lemon. It would be much more prudent to pony up the extra cash on a well maintained version.

On the other side of the argument, you have a car that does have a good amount of miles on it, so it may run just fine...you never know if a valued customer forced the dealers hand in buying back a car that had a few issues that weren't remedied in a timely manner for whatever reason.

Make a low offer and see if the owner bites, or see if you can find out why the car was lemoned in the first place!

Pearl White was actually a factory color back in the eighties. I guess this car was special order/paint to sample.

Sorry for this being my first post but I saw this very clean, low mileage but a 5 owner Turbo.

I've inquired about it but something seems too good to be true. What do you guys think?
