About six months ago when this same subject came up I posted that I thought my MY2001 Turbo had received the extra 996.2 generation strengthening because when I had a seat belt replaced a 996.1 spec unit didn't fit. The shop had to keep the car an extra day until a 996.2 unit could be delivered and installed.

My family and I have owned Porsches for many decades and it is our experience that model year changes never happened exactly on the model year. Things are always phased in earlier. I've heard there are some people with MY2001s that have glove compartments.

So I hate to say it but there probably isn't a definitive point of improvement. I'm sure the chassis engineers were constantly adding little bits of strengthening all the way through the production of the 996. There really are no 996.1 or 996.2 chassis. Instead they did constant development from the very beginning of production in 1998 until its end in 2005.
