terrible noise, passenger window

Just got the car back from pinning the coolant pipes, and now the passenger side window makes a terrible metal-on-glass noise when raising or lowering. I've posted video so you can all hear it in all its terrible glory.

Other than the noise, the window seems to work fine and isn't visibly damaged.

Any ideas?

Remove door panel and pinpoint cause. Regulator?

what else could it be possibly be?

Glass rubbing? but probably would see marring.

Thanks to you all, armed with "window regulator," a few YouTube searches confirmed that, yes, it's almost certainly the window regulator failing (sounds exactly the same). And there's a good set of DIY repair videos on door panel and window regulator removal:
,
,
, and
.

Two questions: (1) anything special about the door panel and regulator removal in the 996tt as compared to regular 996? and (2) what's the procedure for removing the airbag (disconnect the battery?)?

rmc1148 05-27-2015 12:28 AM

Yes disconnect the battery and let sit for 30 minutes or so. I make sure I touch ground with hands before disconnecting= I have never had a problem and have removed lots of bags.

Yeah, that's the regulator, almost certainly. A bad squeak/squeal can arise from the window rubber in the door rubbing against the glass but that noise is regulator related.

Here is a great DIY on how to replace the regulator that should be of some assistance. :)

two items fail in order of frequency affecting window operability on these. window regs and door latches :)

and they are both conveniently 996/986 parts.
