Any options for improving the Tiptronic?
Hey All
just popping in here to ask a question for a friend - he's bought a low mile silver 996-T (his last in a long line of older Porsches like 930 etc..) but he's not enjoying the tip - it feels slow and clunky to him after all his varied 915 and g50 experiences. This is the newest P he's ever bought.
Are there any mod's or alternatives - ecu tweak or mechanical kits etc.. - that he could consider? I've searched but not found anything - hoping you can help?
thanks
Matt

Isn't the Tip Tronic a learning transmission?? Maybe disconnect the battery and it relearns the new driver's driving style?? May help slightly.

#1 - Make sure the car is running properly. How many bars of boost is he seeing?
#2 - There are several ECU programming options. Does your friend have a K16 or K24 car? If K24, a wastegate upgrade should be coupled along with the ECU flash to mitigate lag. Speak to Kevin at UMW.
#3 - Exhaust upgrade will add power and allow the turbos to spool quicker.

Yes, disconnect the battery overnight so the Tip ECU reverts to factory settings and then drive it agressively to have it learn your needs. I also found going to semisolid motor mounts helps keep the trans in an aggressive map.
Lastly switch to paddle shifter steering wheel.
I might have one in black leather for sale in the near future. PM me if interested.

Evolution Motorsports also offers both an upgraded Torque Converter and a reprogrammed Trans TCU software that they claim does the following:
The EVOMSit 996 Turbo TCU upgrade incorporates the following functions:•Increased Rev Limit - 7000 RPMS*
•Increased TQ Limits - Massive Gains Below 4500 RPMS
•Quicker Shifts – Especially at Redline
•Quicker Acceleration Times
•Broader and More Usable Power Band
*The ECU rev limiters must also be calibrated to allow higher TCU shift points. We offer various different ECU/TCU programming options to suite your specific requirements. TCU must be sent to EVOMS for upgrade.
Never did the upgrade to my Tip so I can't speak to the claims. I sold it and switched to a 6 spd and solved all the issues.
Cheers

yeah get a manual or the evoms upgrade for the tip just mentioned. those are the choices.
though paddle shifter conversion wheels are vast improvements over those ridiculous buttons on the wheel lol. but that does nothing to answer the sluggishness
of a tip's trans behavior. though the advice about a reset and relearn of the ecu for the new driver is the best you can for free.

Our 996TT TCU Upgrade will improve shifting under full throttle, redline conditions. It makes the actual shift time faster, and raises the rev limiter giving you more time at maximum power in each gear (making the car faster).
If he's at odds with the behavior around town, or at low load/partial throttle, it won't do much for him. He has to consistently drive it hard to get things to wake up down there. But once he does our TCU upgrade gets him the rest of the way there.
