New to Me 2002 996TT
 

Hello Everyone, I've been out of Porsche ownership for a few years now and just purchased a 2002 996TT 18k miles 1 owner. Haven't driven the car much yet. I'm trying to sort it out, maybe due to the car not being driven much. Clutch doesn't catch until it's almost to the floor. Thinking it's either low fluid, leaky clutch cylinder or air in lines. The second issue, while cruising on the freeway, I can feel a slight miss in the engine. Seems like 1 cylinder or spark plug stopped for a second. Thinking a full tune up will take care of this. Any suggestion would be thankful. Few phone pics below.

I would do plugs filters etc and check coils for cracks. The clutch on these are weird and do not engage smoothly= practice makes perfect. Checking for codes may help find issue also. Car looks nice enjoy it.

sounds like coils for the rough ride. Check the clutch slave (it is a common fail on these cars).
not sure what RMC is talking about my 996turbo and others I have driven the clutch operates normally.

They always seem to engage a little high and cause some stalling when your first getting use to it. Others have noted same maybe you have a better touch lol.

agree. clutch is normally fine lol when it works as it should ! hah
but these clutches are quirky, owing to the hydraulics, thats for sure :)

congrats and enjoy the car. as i say to all new lucky owners. establish a baseline with a 90K service!!
wether it needs it or not including a coolant flush. thats plugs/coils/oil/filters read the book. if its a MT? doesn't matter the miles, the oil in the trans could well be 12+ years old. change ALL fluids, unless its all just been done for you.

or be cheap and guess at when everything that gets changed regularly was. lol..

but again, enjoy it! looks clean.

Welcome! Am I remembering meeting you years and years ago when you had your America Roadster?

I had a 996TT about 7 yrs ago and my friend as well in the same time frame. We both don't recall the clutch feeling like that. My other friend with a NA 996 says it's normal, but he didn't drive his car at that time so couldn't compare. Have to compare if they even are the same system. Maybe just old age and not driving a manual for a while. Thank you all.

When I replaced my coil packs on my 996TT I recall upgrading to the 997 coil packs. I'm sure that whomever you purchase them from will make that recommendation.

Mine had 13000miles and I had to replace the coil packs because of the occasional misfire under load.

997 coil paks supercede the discontinued 996 ones. beru.

establish a baseline by replacing ALL replaceable items that get enlaced at porsche recommended "service intervals".

there is yet another superceded part for the coil packs. be sure to get the latest update.

Was thinking to do some of the service myself, but don't think I'll have the time. Will make a appointment with Don Wise in Campbell, CA. Don has been working on my Porsche's for the past 20 years and would highly recommend him to anyone here. Thanks everyone for your helpful tips and happy to be back on Rennlist.
