Hey guys
wow thanks so much for the response and well absorbed knowledge. The headache of getting stuff overseas as simple as oil will be the customs clearance i am have phoned a few mobil 1 suppliers most of them stock 0w 40 and 5w 40 but not the 5w 50. The thing with Durban also is the high humidity in the weather i dont know if that can constitute what oil you pick just thought i would add that into the equation.

^ per ssst this is the only reason i went with castrol edge 5/40x5/50 is lack of availability of m1 5/50. it has turned out to be a wise decision, near as i can tell. without bringing blackstone into it lol.
i cut open my filters and feel that is sufficient, albeit non scientific proof, that my oil is lubricating.

20C winter 50C summer, most here still use Mobil1 0w40 and lots of Porsches with high mileage, although our new Abu Dhabi based indie (runs a very successful shop in the UK) has recommended using Castrol Edge 10w60 in a friend of mine's Cayenne turbo S which is using around 1 lt./100kms.
Personally I used 0w40 for the last 5 years with no issues.

I was talking to my Mechanic who does the servicing on my 930 he was saying for the 996tt to use castrol edge 10w60 fully synthetic because of South Africa weather but when i did some research it didn't seem like a good thing to use.

Knowing what I know? I wouldn't trust that advice for a minute.

Three Wheelin'
As 0w-40 works fine in Abu Dhabi with temps up to 122f it will probably be fine in Durban as well as Houston.
PS. Mobil 1 0w-40 is recommended by Porsche - but those who know more about oil than Porsche can mix their own cocktails.

i have been advised by folks that build and race porsches that the oil mix of which i speak and use is fine for track use in hot temps and even recommended. it isn't going to harm a street driven car... either.
not for nothing, porsche gets paid to fix cars also or has that not occurred to you? do you by way of example NEED a spoiler apparatus at 2000 us dollars when your spoiler stops properly operating?? no, of course not. your fix is usually a bit of pentosin in the rams for the cost of a dollar or so and an hour of someones ( clearly not yours lol ) time. but you would faithfully take your car to porsche as a lamb led to slaughter, right??!!
so why don't you nd macster keep on reading the porsche book as if it were gospel. i'm not new nor is my car, so have at it smart guy.
0/40 in 122 degree temps?! the heat has gone to your head and affected your capacity to think outside the book. my advice to you would be; follow ALL their recommendations and make sure you change gear oil at 90 k miles also! LOL
