Rotella T6

Rotella T6
After being a thick oil guy, and using Motul 20w60 for years, I decided to try Rotella T6. The engine rattle was reduced about 80-90%. It might get worse as time goes on. I run Motul in race bikes and consider it the finest, but even 20w60 did not quiet the rattle like T6. Must be ZDDP.

Motul was a great oil. It follows in the path of other great oils that have had there additive packages changed. Motul and others need to market there previous formula as a 4 cycle Motorcycle oil.
The Rotella T6 does a good job.

I've used 5w-50 M1 since my second oil change and the engine has 0 rattle.
Even laying under it running on a lift is quiet.
No if there was only a spray/rub on product for the LWFW....getting used to it.

exactly... My experience says you have to be somewhere above 40 on the high side to eliminate the clattering. Couple years back, my mechanic heard it and spent an hour listening with a stethoscope. Prognosis was bad lifters, have to drop the engine, etc... That was my first and last $500 oil change. Engine was and is fine.

5w40 is way to go with the T6, great oil.
That said, 5w50 Castrol Edge is my new preference...can't go wrong with either!

I thought the HTHS and VI of Castrol Edge 5W-50 was slightly better than Mobil 1 0W-40, but worse than Mobil 1 Turbodiesel 5W-40. Mobil 1 5W-50 had the best VI and HTHS numbers. I recently did some research on whether or not I should switch from Mobil 1 5W-40 to Castrol 5W-50, but did not want to downgrade those two critical properties.
I only have old numbers for the Rotella T6 5W-40, so this may not be accurate for today's formulation (if it has changed at all):
KV40 87.0cSt
KV100 14.2cSt
VI 169.5
TBN
HTHS 4.0cP
So looks like it is pretty similar to Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbodiesel:
Viscosity, cSt (ASTM D445)
@ 40 ēC 80
@ 100 ēC 13.7
Viscosity Index 176
Sulfated Ash, wt% (ASTM D874) 1.3
Phosphorous 0.1
Flash Point, ēC (ASTM D92) 231
Density @15.6 ēC g/ml (ASTM D4052) 0.85
Total Base Number, (ASTM D2896) 11.8
MRV at -35ēC, cP (ASTM D4684) 24,453
HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ēC (ASTM D4683) 3.9

Use FF for mine, but love Castrol Syntec (0w30, 0w40). Not a huge fan of trying to run think/thicker oils than intended (5w50, 10w50) because it "sounded" quieter or "felt" smoother. If you post some oil analysis results comparing factory recommended oils to your own, it would make it a bit more compelling.
Rotella has been popular in many circles and run through the mill of oil sampling, so I would run it in a heartbeat if I felt the need to switch..//
