Default Times do change (996TT vs 991 S)

My current toilet reading of the day was Road & Track, and they had a comparison test between the 991 automagic transmission and Lotus Evora automagic.

What caught my eye is the 991 S is 3.6 secs to 60. Wow. Same or faster than the 996 Turbo in most recorded tests. I realize that 0-60 isn't the end all be all statistic, but it's pretty amazing that the super car from 10 years ago is now bested by the base model.

The 991 's' is pretty far from a base model, and with a few ticks of the option box is the same price or even higher then a 996 turbo, not allowing for inflation. But then a 3.6 0-60 is not exactly that fast now, my X5M @5700 lbs can tick off 3.9's all day with launch control.....

Love your avatar x50type (I am looking for this model UT 1/18 since a long time) I was really surprise to see a PDK on the GT3 and also electric steering..... But would love to see it revving at 9000 rpm since there is no tappet anymore. They are using motorcycle like rocker arm....

Hmmm Porsche itself says the 991 S is 4.1 with PDK and 4.3 with 7 spd to 60. Think R&T made a mistake.Every article I have read does not have the Carrera S below 4.0.
A well equipped S comes in about $117K. The 996tt 2002 well equiped was over $130K in 2002 value. So not sure on the comment how the base model or S can come in near the the 996tt???

Have you guys been following all the bashing of the 991GT3? It's a blood letting over there. Between the weight, PDK only, and no sport buckets they are going ape sh*t.

Porsche is notoriously conservative on their times, but you can feel free to check out the magazine yourself for their results...I won't dispute them, but you can feel free.

To me, the Carrera and the Carrera S are not in the same league as the GT3, Turbo, and GT2. Call me snobby, but I consider the normally aspirated cars to be more basic models, and the Turbos to be more upmarket.

Actually quite a few magazines have recorded times under 4. And Porsche always is conservative with their 0-60 times, in fact they often post 0-100kmh (0-62mph) for 0-60.

from zeroto60times.com
2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S (Manual) 0-60 mph 3.7 Quarter Mile 12.1

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK 0-60 mph 3.9 Quarter Mile 12.3

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet PDK 0-60 mph 3.8

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 0-60 mph 4.3 Quarter Mile 12.7

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S PDK 0-60 mph 3.5 Quarter Mile 11.8

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 PDK 0-60 mph 4.2 Quarter Mile 12.7

Who cares about 0-60 benchracing.

But youre right; the new porsches are fast. That 991s beats the 996gt3 around the ring. Thats great progress.

I don't know about times, but I spent half a day with a 991S PDK sport chrono loaner.

According to my butt-o-meter, the 991 is not in the class of a UMW stage1 tuned 996tt. It's not even close.

The 991 is very well composed and deceptively quick car. But it doesn't really feel like a 911.

I am not sure what you define as well equipped, but if you check even a few options boxes you get to 140k. You can easily spend 160+ on a new 991 s.

One thing is paper spec-bull and another thing is the real world. I have a modestly tuned 996t xp50 with exhaust and I have murdered my friend in the 991s the other day. Yeah he got me from 0-60 ( however I find this a stupid benchmark anyway ) but then it was all over for the 991s. I made up the loss and passed him. As far as the twists are concerned, when it comes to cars with 400bhp plus it's all down to the driver.

And another thing... 991s is quicker on the ring because of the PDK and because the handling has moved on - but so what? Bang on some new suspension bits on your 996t and it will handle better than the 991s stock car. And this is why I love the 996t platform, when you feel you are falling behind, just up the ante, invest (relatively modestly) in a more aggressive tune, better suspension and 996t will be good for another 10 years! Once another 10 years period flashes by, just repeat the exercise again! :-).

I think even 0-60, a moderately modified 996tt, maybe a flash and exhaust will most likely take a 991s. There is not too much that can make the 991s faster.

Nothing like turbo boost period. 1.1 or 1.2 bar is just plainly awesome!

+1 @SimonK....

I upped the ante with a Softronic tune & PSS10's and there are very few new cars out there that can say they are outright superior with regard to performance.

As you stated, the beauty of a 996tt platform is the ease at which more performance is gained.
