Gut Check: '04 X50 I'm about to buy
Hi Everyone - After an exhaustive search, I'm very close to coming back to the Porsche fold with a '04 996 TT that I have struck a deal on. A bit about the car:
Atlas Gray over Black interior
X50 (bone stock - no flash or mods)
Navigation
Heated Seats
Aluminum trim (dash bezels, shifter, door handles)
20k miles (one owner car)
Price: $53k
I am having it PPI'd (including DME readout) in the next day or two.
Assuming car is clean / no issues, is the price fair? Any obvious things to check for (car will be inspected at P-car dealership).
Gotta admit...I'm in love with Atlas Gray!

That's a good price for that car IMO. No weird color, no wood trim, black leather, good exterior color, low mileage, etc. That is a good find.

coolant lines for glue degradation, 2nd gear popout on decel, spolier hyd and motor failure, slave cylinder accumaltor fialure. these are the achilles of the 996 turbo. have the ppi concentrate on these issues to ensure you arent dropping large $ shortly after buying the car

Color is great. If you are paying a premium, it is not much more than $3K IMHO. I paid $45 for a '02 X50 from a friend of mine in April. No nav. No heated seats. 25k miles, 2 owner car. The car is worth what one will pay. Good luck!

About 7 months ago, I bought an 04 996 TTx50 Cab (Speed Yellow). It had 32,000 miles, and was listed for $59K. I ended up getting it for $55K. Bone stock, with carbon fiber interior.
Looks like it's in the same neighborhood. I'm LOVING mine!

Thanks guys. Car will be PPI'd tomorrow and assuming all is clear I'll fly in on Friday afternoon to finalize the deal. I then get to look forward to a 700 mile cruise home. Should be fun!

Careful with the dealer PPI..make sure you specify WHAT they will inspect. There is no standard PPI, so they can be pretty superficial...especially with P dealers. And really especially when the current owner is an ongoing Porsche buyer for them and YOU will be gone

Update: the PPI came in this afternoon. Service manager at Porsche dealership called it "extremely clean and pristine". I'll spare all the facts and figures other than the DME output (just b/c I want to make sure I'm interpreting correctly):
5578 total ignitions in Range 1
18 in Range 2
552.8 total hrs
30678 total km
If I'm reading this right, this car has spent about 1/4 second in Range 1 and essentially no time at all in Range 2. And, it looks like it averaged about 34 MPH over it's life.
am I looking at this right? overall, it got a super clean bill of health

My figuring comes up with a bit over 16 seconds of ignitions in range 1.
One quarter second or 16 seconds doesn't mean anything. The DME shuts off fuel/spark at redline.
What's missing is at what engine run time the overrevs occurred.
In the "distant" past... no biggie. Within less than an hour of run back in time. Could be a biggie.
When I've asked about overrevs the techs tell me they like to see an hour's runtime since the overrevs with the engine exhibiting no signs of any problems.
The best thing you can do or someone can do is ride in the car, drive the car and cover 30 miles or so in distance and experience the engine from cold to warm to hot in a variety of usage situations to ensure as best one can the engine (and the rest of the car) operates with no issues.
Sincerely,
Macster.
