PSM on or off? How do you drive your 996tt?
 

For a few months I've been driving my car with PSM on all the time and I have to say the straight line acceleration seemed to be really badly affected by the PSM cutting the power down. I started to think that th epower in this car is not really usable as it seems to be sliding and slipping most of the time in lower gears.

Now that I have tried driving with PSM off I have to say it feels waaaaay better.

I do get some wheel slip when I floor it in 2nd gear but once it gets traction or if the front gets more % of power, wow that pulls. I feel it is actually more fluent that way, even with some wheel spin, does not get as jerky as with the PSM on.

Now I need to work on cornering without PSM and I will be all set but I have to admit it seems to be quite OK to control even with PSM off, of course without getting to close to the limits :) :thumbsup:

Do you leave your PSM on or off most of the time?

As soon as the car is warmed up I turn off the PSM.

I leave it on. I am not measuring lap times around town. If you decide to leave it off, you may want it on in the rain...these cars can act like a GT2 in the wet.

Autocross - off ( A great way to start learning how your car handles with it off and get better times).

Track Days/HPDE - On (I am not racing and need to drive it home).

I feel like it's saved my ass, literally, on more than one occasion.

Neither am I, but I do enjoy being in control of the car. On those occasions where I want to enjoy the torque of my Turbo (straight line acceleration or some rear end out while turning fun), the last thing I want is for some electronic nanny to intervene.

fortunately (or unfortunately) turning psm off with the dash button does not actually turn "Klaus" off....

Normally, I leave it on unless I want to have a little fun. It's come in handy in the rain a couple of times. It works really well when you hit an oily patch on a rain slicked curve.

Mine is on 99% of the time, usually because I forget it's even there.

I haven't been to a safe enough place to explore the limits of the car without it. I know that it has helped me stay out of guard rails a couple times now. If I were trying to go fast in a straight line from a stop or even rolling along in 1st I'd probably switch it off.

Not that it's terribly scientific, but in this Best Motoring video the PSM not only has ass saving properties but may help understeer a bit as well. It's nice to see that it can do other things than just prevent catastrophe after you lift hard throttle mid corner or brake too late into a bend.

But what about hard accelerations in straight line in 2nd gear? Doesn't it annoy you how jerky it is because of PSM?

Are you modded or stock? I don't really get any PSM intervention in a straight line with a hard 2nd gear pull (stock X50).

I also find it interesting the difference in responses here vs. 6Speed.
