brrrrr... 996TT in extreme cold

These cars are rock solid in the cold! So much fun in the snow and ice. Had to park her outside last night, in -33C temps. Fired right up in the morning. Took a while to get her warmed up, drove perfect once she was defrosted.

Tons of cars around the neighborhood couldn't even start this morning. Had to drive around all the tow trucks. :roflmao:

Yikes! That's cold. +77F in Houston today.

Macster 01-17-2012 10:52 PM

That's cold! Coldest temp my Turbo has been in was 19 above!

It has been in 119F though. Top that Calgary!

Just a reminder that Porsche says 5w-40 or 5w-50 oils can be used down to -25C below that 0w-40 oil is recommended.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Try it in an open parking lot. It's a lot of fun. I wrote up a review on how the car handles in the snow here:

Can't believe it's colder out today than yesterday haha. The sun is shining, and my gauge showed -33C. It must've been around -36 last night.

Surely there's a point at which it becomes academic!

Cheers, Ben..who is more used to +40 than -30

After spending a few day in -30, -15 is t-shirt weather.

Awesome, have fun! You won't be disappointed! Just remember, if it understeers, more throttle! :)

What part of the city do you live in btw? I'm up in Arbour Lake.

Gotta get some pics of it out in that sort of cold/snow. Always good to see a TT being used as it should be, even in the snow.

Just out of curiosity, how different did it sound on such a cold start?
Any unusual sounds from the valve train?
I am assuming 0W oil was used.

rage2 01-19-2012 05:08 PM

Only difference in sound was the first 3 cranks to get going. I'm guessing the battery dropped to under 10V in such extreme weather. Once it kicked in, sounds completely normal. The LCD dash display looks hilarious though, it takes about 10 seconds to flip from one screen to another lol.

Mobil 1 0W40 oil used.
