Has anyone simply tried drilling through the centre joint to allow the gases from each side to merge ?

Or is their already flow through the centre joint section its difficult to tell from the pics

Pay no mind to our pessimist friend. He knows very little. Although he is very good at looking up and posting maintenance procedures from a 996TT tech manual.

I did the "drill out" mod to my stock exhaust and had the car dynoed before and after. Saw a slight improvement in lower RPM HP and torque and no losses at high RPM. It is a worth while mod.

Mark, interesting that you dug up this thread from the archives... I had never seen it. I drilled a hole like Carlo mentioned, I really like the sound, a bit heftier, with zero drone - but still pretty mild. My 997 Turbo mufflers were cut open, disemboweled and welded shut. I haven't driven it much yet, so cannot judge how much different it sounds - it isn't very loud. I do know a lot of engineering goes into the muffler package to get the sound the engineers desire. It seems I read somewhere the 996 turbo was kept pretty quiet for certain European laws (Switzerland or Sweden maybe). That said, not sure which components of the muffler would be removed to get a throatier sound or raspy burble like the PSE exhaust. I assume a lot of trial and error.

given i assume your reference is to me, who has had a couple of these cars for nearly a decade, you will of course be wrong about my not "knowing" as i work on the car at my home. so i know what i know lol. bottom line is know plenty about the car and i share what i "know" while admittedly parroting myself daily, but you sir are a master tech, no doubt lol.

also i HAVE HAD a modded oem exhaust and i dispute your specious claim that it does much if anything to "increase" performance. mine is not conjecture nor did it come from an online tech manual. since no online tech manual would co-sign HACKING your exhaust! l o l.

but..since you "dyno'd" your car and found positive results? why don't you share them with the group? oh, but i bet ya don't have them.. right?

otherwise you made a specious and as yet unsubstantiated claim, while attempting to diminish my own personal experience. you can do one, but not the other.

^ sorry, and a bit embarrassed actually because you should have, and could well have been referencing my posts, so my bad and apologies. i'm hyper sensitive because I can be "that guy" and i was defending against an ad hominem attack in an exhaust thread and thought this was it.

but i do disdain that hack but not because it's "free"! but just because it didn't "work" for me.. and i still have it since it will pass smog in the event all the fear mongering re ( not ) passing smog in kali with an aftermarket exhaust becomes the norm and not an outlier event. that said, it would stand to reason that any reduction in back pressure *might* result in some gain, but i just could never discern one. hence my being dubious about it "helping" but then I'm also the guy that can "feel" the advantages of a ipd plenum! so,.. yeah..

TT and GT2 seem to have different part numbers for the exhaust. I know one thing for sure though, both suck butt.

They are really really good at eliminating all drone at all RPMs for daily drivers though...
