This isn't a topic that can, or should be viewed as a win or lose , black or white outcome. Look at it this way. It's just a 'mod' that some may or may not like to try.
Hmmn, data.
No, that would never work here.
Blackstone Oil Analysis...
How many? How often?
What does the data correspond and correlate to in the mechanical world of the engine?
At what point, time, level do you tear apart your engine to avoid the catastrophic event which the oil analysis is predicting?
Looks like we're going to need more Preparation H.
Every forum seems to have these no win threads.
The Mayan calendar can probably predict the life of a 996 Turbo engine with 0W-40 better than the human ear or Blavkstone labs.

Why do we run any oil in an I internal combustion engine?
The simple answer is longevity.
Without any engine oil, how long will an engine last?
With olive oil, how long would an engine last?
Simply put, the longer the engine lasts, the better the oil did it's job.
So, find the longest living 996Turbo motors and list the type of oil (and change interval if you choose) and total mileage.
Data, sample size over time, it tends to help.

I've had good results reducing the noise by adding Wurth oil-additive to Mobil 1 0-40.

the search is on, thanks.
edit: this company makes a lot of "stuff" but i can't seem to locate any. any tip on where this can be found will be appreciated.

understood, thanks. it says in the product info, that it's specifically recommended as an additive for in between oil changes, in high mileage oil change interval cars. in spite of the upthread madness regarding changing oil at 2500 miles, we all know what the oem spec on changes of m1 are, so i'd say we probably qualify as the intended users of product like this to extend the life of the viscosity, at least a little longer.
they also have begun to make synthetic oils some are using. where'd ya get the stuff? i'd like to try it.

All due respect to your mechanic. However, that is not true !
I'm sure there are those that intend to keep the car until 200,00, but how many of us plan to do that? Maybe if you drove 200 miles a day I could see racking up that mileage, but it would likely be all easy hi way miles which would attribute to higher mileage potential. ..
0w-40 is a blanket oil that is better in cold climates than it is in hot. I've been working on engines my entire life, and I don't know one engine builder that would recommend it. Of course I don't know any engine builders in Finland
Besides, 5w-40 and 5w-50 are approved by Porsche. Why do you think they would approve an oil that was not safe to use? Don't let the diesel aspect of the oil that we are discussing throw you off. Rotella T6 and Delvac ESP are very high quality oils with additives that keep it more stable and have many other benefits in our engines as well . And it is a true 5w-40.
If however you are satisfied with what you are using, then you should continue to do what makes you comfortable, and I am not suggesting otherwise.

Wow a happy "synthetic" diesel oil customer.. But.. It's not Porsche approved.. It for your MACK truck..
Good for you. API rated. I swing towards the Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck, and Mobil Delvac. The metal conditioner package in these oils are for sure working with the gears and chains. Cheers

Since you likely have more experience than anyone else here with these engines, if any of these oils were equally readily available to you, which would you run on a mildly modded Engine?
Mobil 1 5W50
Mobil 1 5W40 TDT
Rotela T6 5W40
I use the Mobil 1 5W50 in my Rturbo 550 engine as this is what RUF recommends. My IMS noise is very faint and I don't notice it getting any louder during the course of 3K mile oil changes (maybe just a hair). The car is tracked regularly..
Thanks.......
