Switched to the Mobil 5W-50 today

e.g.
0w40 thickens much less upon cooling compared to 10w40
they both have the same viscosity at 100C but at 0C the 0w40 will be relatively much thinner than the 10w40
but 10W40 & 10W60 ARE NOT at the same viscosity upon cooling
if they're not the same viscosity at 100C why would they be the same viscosity at 0C?
anything labelled 40 weight is 40 weight from -273C up to its Flashpoint
anything labelled 60 weight is 60 weight from -273C up to its Flashpoint

oil is a pseudo plastic = shear thinning
it's also sensitive to heat, if you heat oil it thins out (less viscous), and
if you cool it it thickens (viscosity increases)... agree
remember if you're talking about different oils you have to talk about them at the same temperature, also the way properties are reported require unit manipulation sometimes.

cst = centistokes
one of the ways they measure viscosity
in SI units it's mm^2/s (area/time)
edit:
this is one of the better graphs i've found to show the difference between synthetic oil and single weight mineral oils
note the y axis on the first graph is a log scale that's why you get that straight line, otherwise it would look like this:
if you look at the second graph it shows how much viscosity changes even in synthetic oil
reference for how to read a synthetic bottle e.g. 10w60, go to the first table in this link:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/puttin...nto-viscosity/
note the first number reports the dynamic viscosity and the second reports the kinematic viscosity, which are very different

Yes, I have mentioned that Motul 300V is a great oil. However, you must run the lower viscosity. 20W60 is way to high for this engine.
While we are on this GREAT debate, I had a customer send me a link to Joe Gibbs racing oil. I am actually testing it right now. From my very brief exposure.. less than 2000 miles, it does look pretty good. I say this with caution. My visual cue and listening cues are giving me some hope.. My disclaimer is> the decision has not been made... Guys please hold off until I get a few oil samples and tested.

Joe Gibbs --- How'd it work out?

i have run a 5/40-5/50 blend recommended by the shop i have used for years. also 5/50 castrol edge and now 1k miles in on an m1 5/50 fill. given its already 90 degrees out here most days and wont get cooler for quite some time 5/50 seems a prudent choice and the motor's the "quietest" it's ever been since I've had it. no more *momentary* startup "oil starved" screech either.
don't know about zinc content or the difference btw the two formulations etc, but my gut tells me edge or M1. either or, will do just fine.

Castrol Edge and M1 have a good high zinc content! The Castrol Edge has more than the M1 but not a big difference.
I know the M1 5w-50 meets the A40 spec of which included the european longlife spec. The Castrol Edge 5w-50 is not rated at the A40 spec

Have any of you guys experienced cooler running temps along with your higher pressure? I just switched from 0w40 to 5w50 as the summer here in Texas has been Africa hot lately. On a 104F day in traffic here I was running about 109C engine temp on the climate control cluster. After switching I drove it in the same 104F weather in the same traffic the next day and I was steadily holding 104C engine temp. No other changes. This goes along with almost a 1/2 bar increase in oil pressure when hot.
Just wondering if anyone had seen the same.
Cheers,
Debo

Yes cooler temps on oil changes.
I've been running M1 TDT 5W-40 (yes diesel) for 8 years on all my German cars (incl the Turbo) all the additives, no homage to the Green lobby, comes in gallons and often on sale.
Religiously change the 996TT (every 5k, check heated debate over the years for me cheap insurance, 0 consumption) and have it lab tested, looking awesome. Anecdotal evidence on my 4.2 Audi and 2.0T GTI (160k and 85k miles) both with very little consumption 10 k intervals.
