Default 996TT Vs M5 07

Hi all,
a friend of mine is everyday trying to convince me to race his chipped M5 from rolling 2nd gear.....(I am trying to convince him to to the race from standing start)

any thoughts on the potential race?

my car is an 01 stock + 9ff exhaust +20Hp and manual

thanks

my wife just leased a 08 X3 suv or cross over...i don't know what they call these any more...but back to your question. while at the dealer i was looking at the m5 and m6 and got a chance to read their performance spec sheet. according to bmw the m5 0-60 mph time is 4.5 secs and the m6 is about 4.2 sec. according to some of the magazines, they state that bmw is conservative on their numbers. if that's true they are at the same performance level, 0 to 60 mph only, as the tt. if the m5 is chipped, well then he might have an upper hand. btw both cars are electronically limited to 150 mph max. speed. unless the owner changes these parameters.

having the car chipped i guess that the electronic limiter will be removed...
the thing is that from rolling 2nd gear he might be in front of me...that is what I fell-guess

Don't do it. Without software in your car he will be at an advantage. If you must, do it from a standstill and launch hard. Those cars are 500hp out of the box.

mpclimber...

this sis what I am thinking......but on the other hand it is a friend of mine and I do not really care if I loose...
in fact he knows that I have a strong car as well and this is why he does not want to start the race from standstill..... 911's have one of the best 0-60times....which for 1/4 miles are very usefull.....

FWIW - Frame of reference only; M6 & M5 are comparable; ~510 vs ~420; 997T run for contrast

M6 vs 996T (rolling)

M6 vs 996T (standing - btw, launch control holds to ~4k)

M6 vs 997T

Nevertheless, Driving skill is an unknown, so if safe circumstances, have some fun and run 'em!!

{edit} hadn't realized there was a video for an M5 vs X50 pkg

Because his Bimmer can shift so much faster, he may pull on you, but in sheer acceleration force, I doubt that M5 could hang...

The M5 weighs about 400 pounds more than an M6 so it's nice quite as fast. I think it would be a close race but the M5 might be a bit quicker 0-100 mph and over.

The M5 will own you after 100 mph, before that the 996 TT will be slightly faster or maybe even.

You could kill him from a standstill if you dont blow it. TT's are still hard to launch, but BMW's are far worse.

he looses the hp advantage with the extra 400lb weight the bimmer carries. picks up some with smg, so it depends on his tune. find out if it's a mild cai/exhaust tune or more aggressive. usually M tuners are conservative due to the motor is pretty much at the edge already, at least that was my experience with the 6 cyl m3 motors.
