Question Carbon Steering Wheel??

Hey Guys,

I have a TT on order, with a few days left to make changes. My car will be graphite grey leather with full carbon package. Im thinking about adding carbon on the steering wheel. Any thought, especially in terms of grip on the steering wheel? Anyone with pics, I would appreciate seeing them..Thanks...

I was going to do this on a similar TT, but my dealer (who I actually do trust!) advised me against it. He said that the carbon wheel doesn't slide as well (it's almost sticky he said). I can't vouch for his view as I haven't tried it myself, just passing it on.

I have full carbon package with a savannah beige interior, but I do not have the carbon steering wheel. In my humble opinion the carbon steering wheel only looks good with black leather, the contrast does not work on the wheel. I think a better option is to get the techart steering wheel with extra padding and perforated leather, see Ally's post on the 996 board yesterday - then look at Jack's car in the responses - that is a great look.

I have the carbon steering wheel on the GT2. It slides very nicely in my hands, even when wearing leather driving gloves. Hand position is much easier to "feel" with the leather/carbon transitions, so I happen to like it. It looks great.

Is it better than a nice thick leather steering wheel? I don't know. I like the steering wheel with the full carbon fiber package, which I have. Looks great.

I'd go for it, because I think it peforms as well as a normal leather wheel, but looks just a bit better.

I ordered my x50 with the carbon fiber wheel but changed out to TechArt (with OEM airbag as described above) when car was received at dealer. Had occasion to temporarily switch back to the carbon wheel that came with the car and liked it so much I decided to keep it. BTW, the TechArt, in black, for 6speed, is available if anyone is interested.

I had the 996 three spoke carbon fiber/grey leather steering wheel on my former 993TT and liked it a lot. I went with the full leather on my 996TT for a change.

I think it's a toss up. They are equally enjoyable, it's a matter of a different look and feel, both are very nice. The carbon version does get very hot sitting in the sun, but cools down in a minute or so of driving. To view some pictures of the 3-spoke carbon fiber steering wheel with a grey interior, click on my photo gallery below and go to page 2. I have several pictures showing different angles of the CF steering wheel. If you like the look, I would say go for it. IMHO, it looks great with grey.

Cutter, Ruf doesn't make a carbon wheel. Yours is hand made like mine. I got the Ruf / Gemballa wheel, and had William Rau Restoration hand lay carbon fiber on them.

Just an FYI: For those that like the factory carbon steering wheel, but also like their wheels thick, TechArt ("TA") makes a carbon version of their padded factory wheel (you retain/use your stock airbag)--perforated leather at the appropriate places as well. Also, TA offers another steering wheel design (new airbag included) which is virtually identical to the Ruf/Gemballa version pictured in Shank's post. All these wheels can be ordered with carbon, multicolored leather, custom colored stitching, etc. You can also customize the airbag, whether it's the factory one or the Ruf/Gemballa style airbag.

Standard issue leather airbag on TA wheel:

It's a good thing the dealer said no.
Now you can get it from Gert at Carnewal and save 40%! And, you can still sell the old one!

Check mine out:

Dan

Dan,
Thanks for the info. Your TT is gorgeous! Do you have a link or number for that steering wheel?
Thanks

Hi TestnDoc,

Contact Gert@Carnewal.com or visit them online: http://www.Carnewal.com

The steering wheel is special order and takes about 2-3 weeks to get. Order it now so you can install it as soon as you get the car. Gert is located in Belgium and ships DHL express 2 day. I usually receive my orders within 1 business day from Belgium to New York!

I would check with Gert on any accessories or parts you are interested in purchasing. No games, no run-arounds or excuses. Just honest business at very reasonable prices (usually the cheapest). I am in no way affiliated with Carnewal, Gert just continues to impress and amaze me with every order he delivers.

Just drop him an email or phone call, tell him you are interested in the carbon fiber/gray leather steering wheel for a 2003 996tt. Mention me [Dan Shashou from New York] so that Gert can look up my order history if he needs to.

Regards,
Dan
