'01 996 TT - First Impressions (long)
Well, the TT came late last week. Very nicely finished in Artic Silver, with Sports seats and Lots of Carbon Fibre. Pictures at:
I've put almost 500 miles on it and here are a few first impressions. Context: I literally stepped out of my '97 993TT and into this car.
It's a big car, and feels much heavier than the 993, the handling will need some sorting out to even come close to that incredible go-cart feel of the 993. Can it even get to that level ?
The Torque rush is unbelievable, even though I am being good and holding the RPM's below 4000 (mostly It's FAST.
The Ergos and interior comfort are superior. This is a car I could drive for 12 hours, if the stereo were better. I have already put in the call to Reus.
Likes: Power, comfort, ride, OIL CHECK SYSTEM
Dislikes: Small Gas tank, VariCam dead spot at 3K, wallow in tight corners.
Coming changes: Suspension, GT2 Seats ?

Dead spot at 3K:- Surprising.
GT2 seats:- But I still love the look of those painted seat back sport seats that you have. Do they adjust electrically in all ways like the 993 sport seats or are they a bit more limited in adjustability like the normally aspirated 996 sport seating? How is the lateral support on the sport seats and is that the reason for going to the GT2 seating?
How much smaller is the tank compared to the 993TT?
BEST OF LUCK and enjoy your car.

My 993TT sports seats were manual adjustment, except for height. The 996TT sports seats are elecrical seatback and height adjustments, with manual adjustment for seat position. The 996TT sport seats are not as deep as the 993. The lateral support is fine for road use, or occasional DE. Anything more serious needs more support. The GT3/GT2 seats are also much more comfortable when wearing a helmet.
The flat spot between 2.5-3K is well documented, it does not appear when hard on the throttle, but can be frequently felt round town. I have driven 2 other TTS that exhibit the same characteristic.
The 993TT fuel tank is 24 Gallons total (19+3.9 reserve) the 996TT manual does not give a total capacity, but a "refill volume" of 16.6 Gallons.

Well, so did I till Ran asked, and I checked the 993TT manual, and got this strange quote from the capacities page.(151)
"Fuel Tank approx. 19 U.S. gals/72 litres, including approx 2.6 US gals/10 liters (Turbo 3.9 U.S. gals./15 liters) reserve or approx 24 US gals/92 liters." I guess the question is. Does the stated capacity include the reserve or not with Porshes ?

What reserve? I don't have my 993 manual anymore but I don't remember reading about a fuel reserve or ever using one. It seems to me that it would take 13 to 14 US gallons when I flled it typically.
Incidentally, I got terrible gas mileage in the 993, I'm sure it was me as those cars invite throttle. But typically it was between 13 to 15 mpg. My best over-the-road mileage was 19.3 back and forth and including an autocross. My motor was also "chipped" and I'm sure that didn't help mileage.
Anyone have any mileage reports on the 996TT?

I'm actually getting better mileage in the 996TT than I ever got in the 993TT. Went for a looong drive a few days ago and the OBC stated I got 17.5 for the round trip of 150 miles. I never saw better than 15 on the 993tt. I don't know who did the transport, but I've had my car more than a week. Where's your car coming from Garey ? If it's Factory delivery to a Porsche dealer the load probably originated in Charleston S.C. I bet you can't wait !

Robin,
Beautiful car, best of luck with it. Would you mind posting your options list? I'm due to place my order soon and am trying to collect as much comparitive data as possible on popular options. I plan to go with Polar Silver and Natural Grey but I'm debating the different interior options for added leather and carbon fiber. Your combination looks very well balanced to me.

Sure,
Here are the options on my car.
Arctic silver, sports seats, PCM,Carbon dashboard pkg, seat backs painted Arctic silver, Porsche crest in headrests, aluminum instrument faces, heated seats, CD changer, Digital sound, carbon/aluminum brake lever/shifter, 3 spoke steering wheel carbon/leather. I should point out that the NAV system is DOA, and new parts are ordered.

Where did you get these figures from? Not that it matters much but I was under the impression that all 993 cars sold in the US had a fuel tank of 19.4 gallons total. The 996 Turbo has 16.3 gallon tank.</STRONG>

I know you will try to prove me wrong, but here it goes anyway.Once in a while I pick up a 993tt in Santa Barbara to do certain modification because the owner races occasionaly. The car has 570hp. Now comes the kicker; It gets 23 to 24 miles per gallon at 70 mph. When the reserve light comes on I look for a gas station and fill anywhere from 21 to 22 gallons. That, my friend, is a little more then your 19 gallons.
Peace

Well, I thought an update might be appropriate.
Almost 800 miles, .50 ML of oil consumed, about 15.5 MPG, and the dealer replaced the brain-dead NAV system CD. Works well now.
For it's size, weight and height, this car handles the tight stuff well. E-Throttle is weird.
