Talking Need advice on used 2001 - 2004 Turbo

Hello,

I'm brand new to this forum and this is my 1st thread. I am looking at buying a used 2001 - 2004 turbo at the end of this month. Before I buy one I want to get your advice, tips, things to look for, things to avoid, etc. Any information you want to share will be much appreciated.

My previous car:
2005 Chrysler 300C with HEMI, GSM supercharger and big boost kit along with many other performance mods. The car was putting down 415 rwhp and 435 rwtq. I loved that car but have always wanted a 911 turbo and decided to sell it and get my dream car. I owned a 1977 porsche 911 with 1989 engine, 1988 turbo body kit and many extras. The car looked like a turbo but it was not. I had to sell it due to rust problems. Now I am ready for a 996 Turbo !!!

Any information you have to share will be very helpful. I look forward to getting to know all of you and eventually contributing to the forum in a knowledgable manner.

Thanks.

Bring on the information

Stay away from MY2000 996TT, other than that they are all good!

Any major differences between 2001 and 2002 models. I'm most likely getting a 2001 or 2002 that's why I ask.

Which car will depend on the amount of money you would like to spend? I am also in OC.

I'm looking at spending around 75,000 - 80,000 from what I can see on the market. Do I need to worry about gas guzzler or luxery tax? I just want to make sure there is no big difference from 2001 to 2002 or 2003.

Good one. I didn't realize I put 2000 to 2004 on everything. Like I said I am new to the forum and would like to make an educated purchase when I get my car.

I have an '02 TT...what's the story with the '00? I was under the impression that by '02 most 'problems' had been fixed - would you want to own a flawed but 'rare' car simply for the sake of scarcity? Don't take that question too broadly...keep it to 996 TT's (as opposed to owning some arcane marque with unique characteristics yet blatant flaws).

Thanks in advance!

All of the local dealers have there cars on autotrader.com. I would start there. Also, look at the PCA.org web site. The last place is the Porsche web site. Three good sources.

You mean by 02 they finally realized they had been forgetting to install glove compartments?
IIRC, a change from 01 to 02 was a change in plugs from FR5 to FR6.
Did I miss something else?

Thanks for the info. Autotrader is the place I've been using. If I buy from a private party I can get a better deal from what I've seen. Are there any drawbacks from buying from a private party rather than from a dealer. I know the financing rates are a little higher when you purchase from a private party.

PP purchaseses are great becuase you get to meet the old driver of the car. Ask questions and feel good about the purchase. Just have it checked out before you buy.

You can do a search for more detail on the differences between the 01 and 02 cars. The chassis, drive train and suspension are the same. In 02, Porsche added a glove box, Bose, flat black switchgear (gloss in 01), rain sensing wipers, and a few other things. I'm not aware of any "problems" that were fixed in the 02 MY. I have a 01, bought it new, and it has had no major problems.

Good luck.
Roy
