You should use Intake Cleaner, NOT carb cleaner. Same shelf in the store but they are different. I used this on my 84 Carrera and recommended this procedure on this forum. My air sensor was contaminated with years of intake dirt and purple oil from the air filter.

Steve

I use the same thing as Dock.

I bought that same stuff and was going to try it (QD electronic cleaner),
and I found out you need a special "security torx tool". where do you
buy these and what size is the tool or is it one size fits all?

how often do you guys clean your maf,s???? i ran about 3000 with no probs... maybe a clean job every oil change ???

If carbon has accumulated on the sensor wires, then you have to use something stronger than electronics cleaner. Carb cleaner woirks great and has been used to clean these sensors for almost 10 years. Regularly cleaning it with starter fluid or carb cleaner is all you have to do and no damage will occur.

Here is a pic and the instructions...again.

Unplug the sensor (Item 3 is the sensor). Remove the two T20 security Torx screws (Item 4). It's clipped in, so you need to press the little release at the side of the plug to pull it out. Replace the sensor and tighten screws. Plug electrical connection back in.

Why did the MAF become dirty in the first place. Over-oiled aftermarket air filter?

guess ,,,,,, maybe could be my evo air box........... have not oiled filter yet..... i can live with cleaning my maf every 2 or 3000 miles and keep the evo it's worth the cals it takes to clean the maf

That picture is actually for a NA car.

Where does the carbon come from?

Joe Weinstein 11-21-2005 12:59 AM

soot from the air that passes through the filter and/or oil from oiled
filters. Particles below a certain size do pass through the filter.
