Engine builders and beer come out of Golden Co, very nice.
That is not a bad price on the build.

Thanks for your reply. When we eliminated the Turbo as the issue I decided to put a hold on further investigation until I figured out next steps. The info everyone is providing is awesome. I'll reach out to Chris. Once I have a way forward I'll continue with a compression test, camera and whatever else is required before moving to a rebuild. Thanks again!

Unfortunately it looks like Chris's business has been closed. I can't find a phone # and what I can find says the LLC was voluntarily shut down.
Any other ideas out there for garages / people who rebuild 996 engines? Thanks!

GMG (Global Motorsports Group) in Santa Ana did my 997TT Mezger. We upsized from 3.6 to 3.8L in the process. Obviously the internals were built up- Carillo rods, EVOMS studs, etc. GMG knows their stuff around Mezgers. I've put about 10K miles on it so far since the full rebuild- it runs phenomenally. The pricing was roughly in line with the above posted invoice from Cervelli.

Chris Cervelli has built both my 3.8 and my 4.0 for me. You won't find a finer engine builder anywhere. He's also built several gearboxes including my current GT2 race gearbox. The 4.0 is a healthy jump in performance over the 3.8 but obviously more money. The Mahle Motorsport 4.0 piston liner kit has ribbed liners and other trick aspects not seen in the 3.8 kit but it comes at a 50% higher cost of than the 3.8 kit and you have to have the water jackets machined. Fitting the 106mm pistons into the liners is also much more involved.

Chris's business is not closed. I'm at the shop on a weekly basis. He just does not advertise nor does he make himself available to the general public.

That's why I am asking: does he want to just repair the car and drive it for 100,000 miles or does he want to show up somewhere with a bunch of money and do a big build. Makes a big difference on who to send him to.

You want an equally competent builder for a basic build or something more involved.

Thanks for this information! I called and spoke to Alan. Great guy! He strongly advised that I do additional investigation as from what I'm describing it sounds very much like a leak in the turbo. He's too far for me to drive so he recommended Alan at BR Racing. I spoke to BR which is only 45 miles away and I'll drop my car off there next week. Some day I would like to do a rebuild but only when absolutely necessary. If we can repair the issue for a few K and get me back on the track soon then so much the better! I'll keep everyone posted as to final determination and solution.
