Stereo Upgrade
I went ahead and upgraded my stereo today. Had the car for 4 months and couldn't deal with the outdated system anymore so I brought it into the 21st century. I was gong to change the head unit and keep the stock amp and speakers ,but was getting inconsistent information from car installers and vendors about correct Axxess wiring harness for the car so I decided to just get a new amp as well.
Went with a Kenwood DMX907s head unit and Sony 5 channel amp. The amp only puts out 45 watts per channel for front and rears, but the sound level sounds almost equivalent to my JL audio amp in my other car that pushed 75 watts per channel. System sounds much better that the stock even with stock speakers. |
Awesome what equipment did you install besides the amp?
|
Nothing else. Just changed the head unit and amplifier. Head unit is pretty sweet. Only downside so far is that the display is not HD. Not noticeable unless you are watching video.
|
What year is your car? Did it have the MOST system?
|
Willing to share some photos? :)
|
Its 2004 and yes it did have the MOST fiber optic system. Thats why I originally thought about Axxess wiring harness
|
Will try to do that today

One of the best upgrades. My car feels like a brand new car.

my long faithful and functional cdr23 i do believe, has given up the ghost. i was able to jump start it now and then by pulling the d8 fuse. but alas - no more.
i do believe i need an apple car play. i would appreciate the functionality and i tunes sync etc. |
I have an '04 as well and have been wanting to do this upgrade. Would you mind posting the model of the Sony amp? I would like to start my research with a known working configuration. Was the amp plug and play or did you have to play with the harness between the radio and amp?

I’m considering the Porsche classic PCM replacement for my 2005. The cost is about $1600 plus install but you get a discount if you’re a PCA member. I should get some of it back when I sell the car. Definitely not cheap but it will maintain OEM status. I went aftermarket in my 993.

Would love to see pics, my old MOST system is starting to reduce my desire to drive the car at times. Rarely turn it on, mostly listen to the speedtech exhaust instead.

I installed the PCCM+ in my '04 and could not be happier. For cars that have MOST from the factory, it's literally a plug and play upgrade and actually sounds better. As a FYI, Suncoast Porsche has better pricing for this than the link you've shown. Also, if you're not planning a DIY install, be aware that some Porsche dealers won't install it unless you bought it from them - mine wouldn't at that's what motivated me to just do it myself.

Did you guys get the maps from Porsche along with the PCCM+ or are you just using your phone nav?
